Just to be a bit contrarian, it is interesting how we have come to expect sales and bargain prices.

Consider: when was the last time an employee decided to work for 10%, 15% or more to help make a product more affordable? Probably not very often.

Is the FX 50mm f1.8g the lens I would want for shooting portraits with a blurred background using a Nikon D3400?

A blurry background can be achieved by a fast prime lens such as the 50mm f18G.

When you sell the best you don't need to put it on sale

Nikon is NOT cutting R&D, in fact, just the opposite is true. After a particular bad year about 2 years ago, they have invested a lot in R&D hiring young aggressive engineers.
You should really stay up on this stuff.
And, they ARE doing really well, you still can't get the Nikon 500 5.6, if you remember when the D850 came out folks couldn't get that one for about a year because of strong sales. And sales are still exceeding earning expectations, including the D500.
And they are offering deals on Black Friday, matching the one's they offered last year, or better. A great deal on the 3000 series camera's, half price with two lenses is a great deal.
And, they will be offering a NEW 120-300mm 2.8 along with the D6 in the spring. Those young engineers will be cranking out new exciting products over the next couple of years. Stay tuned for the re emergence of a great brand.

I do keep up. I just read their latest financials.
NOT good. Forecast to NOT make a profit for the first time ever next year.
That's a major red line for any business.

Nikon in trouble? They seem to cater to the pros more every year.

Yup ... in trouble.
Shrinking profit in a shrinking market. Those are the numbers.
I understand the emotion behind it all, but the math doesn't care about that.

Nikon as a manufacturer is in a prime position for selling retail, while the official Nikon dealers such as Adorama and B&H Photo in NY are outlets for the 'factory refurbished' cameras. They use only Nikon parts or Canon (For Canon products). Some great deals are available in the 'factory refurbished' areas, even ads on Ebay show 'factory refurbished' by Nikon. These are unusually offered for less than you will find them at NikonUsa web page.
Many factory refurbished items are available with a guarantee by a recognized Nikon dealer. Take a look to compare. I have never been disappointed but rather surprised at the cleanness and condition of cameras and lenses I've purchased from official Nikon shops like those mentioned above. A list of official dealers can be downloaded from Nikon USA's web page.

In all honesty...I carry a Sony 24.3 A77 with an 18-250 lens...so I don't really even look at what Nikon offers!

And you had a burning desire to post that?

I use several camera brands none of them made by Sony. I occasionally look at what Sony offers but so far I see no reason to jump ship.

Yes a shrinking market is the reality of the high performance camera market today. All high performance camera manufacturers are in that market.

It would seem today’s market cannot support all the companies who are competing. Nikon seems to be doing what companies need to do to survive.

Perhaps your crystal ball is less foggy than mine because I cannot see who will win this competition. Given that, you would be wise to invest your spare $ in who you think will be the winners.

Good luck.

There is more to portraiture than blurry backgrounds and there is more to bokeh than blurry but the short answer your question is yes.

Yes, my box is full also but if you watch the prices they are the same as they were a month ago. I just think it would be good for Nikon to offer a couple of "real deals" even if for a day or two to excite their loyal followers. It gives the appearance of having a Christmas spirit and would only make people appreciate the brand more.
