17-55mm 2.8- it’s an older one but high quality lens. What lens you used on your older Nikon, you can used it on the new body
I have a Tamron 70-300mm DI VC that works quite well with my Nikon D500!..The vibration control on this lens is excellent, and you can shoot at higher ISO's with this camera and lens combination!..(I too had a D50, and had it converted to infrared Only)This tamron lens comes with a 6 year warranty, and sill not "bust your budget"..Checkout folks like B&H and Adorama fro pricing!..You're gonna LOVE that D500!!

First, although I’ve loved “taking pictures” for years, I still consider myself a rookie. I loved my Nikon D50 (we went everywhere together) but recently I got a Nikon D500 camera body.
What I’d like to know is what you would recommend as a good all-round versatile lens. I like street photography, landscapes, old buildings/ruins, dogs (I go sheepdog trials whenever I can), horses - action shots in general - not too much into portrait photography. Also, at the sheepdog trials, the action is usually far away. What’s a decent lens for that sort of situation?
Thanks in advance.

I think the Nikon 18-200 VRII is a great lens, light, 27-300 mm angle of view on the D500. You can get great deals on this lens used off ebay. A good place to start.

Look at the Tamron 18-400
Nikon 18-300mm, or 18-200mm, if you don't need a focal range to 300mm. Both are very good lenses. And won't break the bank.

I think that makes 5 of us who like the 17-55.
Some background on the 17-55:
It was made back when Nikon had no full-frame cameras.
The build quality is the same as the current “trinity” of pro lenses, because it was a pro lens back in the day.
No VR, but easily hand-holdable.
Sharp, fast and more affordable now. (Depending on one’s budget)
I was blown away with the step up in image quality the first time I used this lens.
Nikon’s best DX zoom.
.....but it’s a bit short for the OP’s stated needs.

My thoughts as well. I love mine.

I had to laugh at this typo. Cracked me up. As for the question, if it was me (and it was once not long ago) I would start buying full frame glass. I concluded that some day I would buy a full frame body, and about a year later I did. I have had good success with the suite of Tamron G2 lenses on my D500 and they can now be used on my D810 as well. Tamron makes quality lenses at about half the cost of Nikon glass.
I have a D500 and a D810 so most of my lenses that I use on my D500 are FX and not DX.
For reach, the already mentioned Nikon (FX) 70-300mm AF P is a great lens at a decent price. I also recommend the Nikon 70-200 f4 lens which is very sharp and light in weight and costs a lot less than the 70-200mm f 2.8.
The (FX) 300mm f4 P lens is simply outstanding either with a nikon 1.4x teleconverter or without. It is on my D 500 a lot.
Regarding smaller focal lengths, the 35mm DX lens already mentioned is small and very sharp and is a steal at its price.
For a more normal lens, what focal length range works best for you only you can decide. There are lots of choices out there and I think personal preference drives this decision more than lens image quality, etc. That being said, I use Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR Lens, but this is a FX lens.
My favorite general lens is the Nikon 16-80mm. Not so cheap but good. The 16-85mm is cheaper but not as good.

I agree with the Nikon 16-80. I keep it on my D500 most of the time. It's the crop equivalent to the full frame 24-120, which I use a lot on my D850.
I'd like to know as well. I have a Nikon d5600 and love all the same as you posted. Not into Portrait Photography either. Thanks in advance! Rae
I love my 18-300. It is on my camera most of the time. It is a great travel lens.

I agree, I have had excellent results with the Tamron 18-400 on my D500 and I have very high standards.
