First, although I’ve loved “taking pictures” for years, I still consider myself a rookie. I loved my Nikon D50 (we went everywhere together) but recently I got a Nikon D500 camera body.
What I’d like to know is what you would recommend as a good all-round versatile lens. I like street photography, landscapes, old buildings/ruins, dogs (I go sheepdog trials whenever I can), horses - action shots in general - not too much into portrait photography. Also, at the sheepdog trials, the action is usually far away. What’s a decent lens for that sort of situation?

Thanks in advance.

My walk around lens for my D500 is the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS. I use the latest Nikon full frame AF P 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 VR for distance, and you may consider the DX Nikon 35 f/1.8 for lower light. The others I use on the D500 are FX lenses so they're usable on my D750 and D850 as well.

Before choosing, i suggest that you review the shots taken with your previous camera to see what focal lengths you prefer. Each of the lenses mentioned by others could be the best for you depending on your preferences.

Personally, when I put my D500 in my car without any specific goal in mind, i use the 18-300. If i am using multiple lenses, they would be the 16-80 and a zoom like the excellent AF-P 70-300. As mentioned by others, the FX version has better IQ, but the DX version is also very good and much lighter if weight is an issue.

If you are not familiar with Ken Rockwell, he has reviews of each and every Nikon lens out there, along with some fairly opinionated comments. Might be worth checking out, for the information if not the conclusions.

I have D500. My general walk around is DX 18-200. After that, I won't buy another DX lens, FX only. For a little longer reach, such as out of close quarters I use FX AF-P NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6E ED VR. Under $600 and incredible reach. I use it for nature and air shows. Very good lens.

I second the suggestion for the 18-200. It’s my “walk around” lens and covers 90% of what I shoot.

I have the 28-300 VR lens for sale for $500.
I am slowly switching to Sony camera and lenses. I still have the Nikon D500 but I only use a 24-70 lens on it.
PM me if interested.

I know I will be an outlier here. When I moved up to a D200 from a D70 I purchased a 17-55 2.8 DX. Used in on the D200, 300 and now is my Normal lens for my D500.

I have the D500. The lens that's most used is a 18 - 300 that picked up cheap in London some years ago. Reasonably crisp and very flexible. The only drawback: it is heavy.

What do you mean by “soft” photos?

This lens suffers from an inability to produce well focussed images. It is a common issue with lenses that have a variable aperture. That is a lens where the maximum aperture decreases as the focal length increases. You can tell if the marking on the barrel is something like f/3.5-5.6 They are more money, but I prefer fixed aperture lenses for this reason and generally they are f/2.8. For the kind of work you want the lens for, I’d suggest a Nikkor FX 70-200mm f/2.8 and look at one of the prior versions with VR. Well built, durable and excellent image quality. Good value in the pre-owned market.

My favorite "everyday lens" for my D500 is a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8. The crop factor makes it a near equivalent to a 24-70.

18-140, or 18-300, depending on if you need the longer range.

We'll second the vote for the Tamron 18-400. We love it on our D7200 and it should perform well on your D500 as well. Take care & ...

17-55mm 2.8- it’s an older one but high quality lens. What lens you used on your older Nikon, you can used it on the new body
