This is for all of our Bird Photographers in UHH. I saw this posted on the internet, and it is not a quality photograph. But I have never seen a photo of the smallest bird in the world and don't know how many of you also have not. So I post this for general interest. I never imagined the smallest bird would be as small as this. Enjoy.

This is the Topaz Hummingbird.

It is the smallest bird in the world.

This is a nice photo and a very small bird...but the smallest Hummer is the bee hummig bird.

The smallest bird is the bee hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) of Cuba and the Isle of Youth. Males measure 57 mm (2.24 in) in total length, half of which is taken up by the bill and tail, and weigh 1.6 g (0.056 oz) Females are slightly larger. This is believed to be the lowest weight limit for any warm blooded animal.

For info and pic......

I know nothing about birds and did not spend time researching them for my post. The post I read online said that it was the smallest. Anyway, that picture shows a really, really, really small bird. Enjoy it.

I think your photo had been ‘shopped’ before it was put online. The Topaza pella hummers are 8-9 inches long including the tail according to the bird book. That would make it one of the largest, not smallest.
You could say this is an example of people reading something and not researching it any further. I find myself doing it far too often and then having to find an excuse for my failure to fact check.

Sorry, that is a fake, I have seen it before. The bird is paper made by an artist in India and the branch is ceramic.. Topazes are actually among the largest hummingbirds. The smallest is the "Bee Hummingbird" aka "Bumble Bee Hummingbird" of Cuba. from Wiki: Males measure 57 mm (2.24 in) in total length, half of which is taken up by the bill and tail, and weigh 1.6 g (0.056 oz) Females are slightly larger.

Photo Gallery rules say "This section is for posting pictures you took." Do I hear a vote for General Chit-Chat?

woodworkerman,
I don’t want to add to any shame that you might feel has been heaped on you by others. Of course, one must endorse frankraney for setting the record straight.

I admit it is possible that I, too, might someday inadvertently post something that is factually untrue. BUT aside from subjects within my area of professional expertise (which is NOT photography,) I cite my source to substantiate my statement/assertion. This habit also provides a means for those who are skeptical to determine the veracity of what I state.

You may want to consider citing a source should you post some statement in any subject you’re not too familiar with. This should help preserve your online reputation.

Take care,
lev29
