I lived on the shore of lake Erie. It is the shallowest of the lakes. Our house was on a cliff 100' above the water and 120' back from the edge. The spray from a late November storm, before the lake froze, could cover the back of my house with 1" to 2" of ice. The Great Lakes are incredibly powerful bodies of water.

A very nice tribute!!! I have passed the link on to a friend that always remembers the date. The song is on my playlist as I've always liked Gordon Lightfoot's music.

Thanks for sharing this!!

That was a very touching tribute to the crew.

I was assigned to an old Sumner Class destroyer at one time, USS Henley, DD762. We took Cape Hatteras in a storm one time, and even on the bridge, I was scared to death. Some of the crew members had just finished a N. Atlantic operation, and those seas caused a lot of damage to the exposed topside of the ship. I can only imagine what happened to Edmund Fitzgerald.

Thank you for posting - I know Gordon Lightfoot’s song well.

Btw, my father-in-law served on the original USS Henley, DD391, in WW2 in the pacific (and on the USS Lamson, DD367). I have a copy of the logs.

Great video and I hate to be a party pooper but did you get the rights to use the song in the video?

The song is well over the 25 year copyright limit.

If you want to read about a boat in a storm, read "The Perfect Storm" by Junger. It is an account of what probably happened to a fishing boat that sank off Nova Scotia. The author interviewed fisherman for details of what it's like in a big storm and how near-drowning feels. There are some critics who say that Junger exaggerated some of the details (100 foot waves, when markers said 30 at most), but it's a gripping read. It was made into a movie, which I have not seen.

awesome presentation. I love that song and it never fails to produce a tear or two when ever I hear it

Ditto. Because of the song, the world will remember the crew of the "Edmund Fitzgerald" whenever and wherever it is played. Thank you for your efforts and for sharing.

Thank you for the wonderful link as I have enjoyed the song ever since it came out but have never seen the information put forth in such a way. Of course I heard about it but I was never confronted with all the information concerning the accident. It was sad to see the faces that fell to such a tragedy and then to imagine how their families felt and what they went through. Some times we tend to get so involved with our lives that we can't see whats going on around us.
Thanks Again, David

The movie of the same name, is entertaining and a bit informative. When "The Perfect Storm" hit, it was a combination of three storms converging in the Atlantic. The crew of the FV Andrea Gail was the focus, although there were several other incidents which were highlighted in the movie.

The makers did take a lot of cinematic license, but you get the gist of just how bad the storm really was. The final scene, when Andrea Gail went under made it appear that the crest of the wave may have been 100 feet, but no one will ever know.
