Apparently there are issues with Lightroom as Adobe has inexcusably not updated all components to 64 bit.

Could be. I have Mojave, that I uploaded about two weeks ago. For me, there is no need to do another update.

I lost Photoshop6 and Apple Aperture to the upgrade. Loved Aperture but switched to Capture1 and haven’t looked back. 😎

I upgraded last night. The new Catalina will not run Photoshop CS6 but Lightroom 6.14 is running fine. Took a while to update my Photos app.

Affinity and Liminus 3 are also running as expected.

So far everything is running fine.

I'm taking an uncharacteristically cautious approach: First, I'm installing Catalina in a virtual machine, using Parallels Desktop for Mac. I did so with a beta, but it was nearly useless. I'll tinker with it a bit and see if the new features are worth it. I suspect they will be.

Then, before I decide to upgrade, I'll set up another VM with Mojave. This will allow me to continue using those apps that will no longer function under Catalina; some of you have already listed a few. It's also a good opportunity to scrub my computer of apps I no longer use that won't run anyway.

The Go64 app is very useful for this. I am also using a command line to identify 32-bit items. For those who are comfortable using the Terminal app, here's the command:

mdfind "(kMDItemExecutableArchitectures == 'i386') && (kMDItemExecutableArchitectures != 'x86_64')"

Explanation: mdfind is the command equivalent of Apple's "Spotlight" search engine. This command outputs EVERY 32-bit component it finds, including developer libraries, kernel extensions, and more. Quite simply, it searches for items that are i386 (32-bit) processor types, and NOT x86_64 (64-bit processor types). I pipe the output to a text file that I can then search for more:

mdfind "(kMDItemExecutableArchitectures == 'i386') && (kMDItemExecutableArchitectures != 'x86_64')" > ~/Desktop/32bitStuff.txt

M,
It's not about your hardware, it's about your software. See the reply from Fred. Don't rush into this until you fully understand the the how the upgrade will affect your other applications. This is not your typical OSX upgrade.

Damn. I updated yesterday on my Mac air so I would have the latest version for a trip in two weeks. Will LR and PS be disabled?

UHH won't let me post a link, so this is a quote from PhotoFocus -- Warning: Warning: macOS Catalina has some issues with Photoshop, Lightroom CC & Lightroom Classic
---
If you are a Mac user, the latest macOS Catalina is now available. Read this post before upgrading your computer. There are issues with Photoshop and Lightroom CC and Classic.

Best practices
There are two. Adobe recommends that users test these 3 applications on a separate partition that is not involved with actual production. The other is to simply wait to upgrade until the issues are resolved.

Photoshop
Legacy stand-alone versions of Photoshop will not work at all. This is due to the use of 32-bit code. macOS Catalina is exclusively running in 64-bit.
File naming options do not work correctly in File > Save as…
changing the file format does not change the extension.
workaround by manually changing it in the Finder or Bridge
Photoshop will not open a file that does not have the correct extension (.psd, .tif, .jpg, etc.)
Checking Save as a copy does not add copy to the title. Again, this has to be added manually.
Plug-ins not found or cannot be verified
Plug-ins that are quarantined return a Photoshop error “the file was not found” or an OS error that says the plug-in “can’t be opened because it’s integrity cannot be verified.”
Droplets created with older versions won’t work.
Older versions of Photoshop made 32-bit droplets which won’t run in Catalina’s 64-bit space.
workaround by updating to Photoshop version 20.0.6 then open the droplets in Photoshop. Older droplets are converted to 64-bit.
ExtendScript Toolkit does not run
Again this is the 32-bit thing.
The toolkit is being replaced with ExtendScript Debugger 1.1.0
Lens Profile Creator does not run
32-bit is the reason
Adobe is investigating an update to 64-bit.
Lightroom CC
Lightroom 2.4.1 and later is compatible with macOS Catalina
Older versions are not supported on the new macOS
Error:/[volume name] is disconnected. Please reconnect to continue syncing
Launching Lightroom 2.2 and earlier in MacOS Catalina produces a red banner stating: “/[volume name] is disconnected. Please reconnect to continue syncing.”
Resolve this issue by upgrading to version 2.4
Lens Profile Creator does not run
32-bit is why. See above
Lightroom Classic
Version 8.4.1 runs with some issues
Tether does not detect Nikon cameras when the camera is on after the user chooses “Start Tether Capture…”
Workaround: Turn the camera on before choosing File > Tethered Capture > Start Tether Capture
Adobe is working with Nikon for a fix.
Lens Profile Creator (still) doesn’t run.
For more on these issues and in-depth workarounds check these links:

Photoshop, Lightroom CC & Lightroom Classic

Fixes are coming
To get fixes as Adobe releases them, launch the Creative Cloud app and choose automatic updates. In the meantime postpone upgrading to the MacOS.

[quote=margaretnewell]Has anyone updated to Catalina yet, and if so have you noticed any photographic glitches.

I just updated last night and found that I had to wait for all the photos in my Mac to become available (took about 30 minutes) after I started using Catalina.

Also Apple gives you a list of programs that need to be upgraded to 64 bit after it loads Catalina.

My biggest frustration was losing my desktop background photo which meant I had to go back in my photo library to 2009 and reload it.
Works, and looks, fine now.

I commented earlier that I had done it last night but had not got tested it by using it. This morning I did. There is a big glitch in that the dock disappears. You can google that for different solutions. I played with preferences on dock setting and it came back after a restart. Others have reported if disappears again. Only two of my apps stopped working and I hardly use them. One was photomechanical. Importantly LR and PS seem to work. A big caveat is that the system seems unstable. Ie, clicking the yellow dot to minimize an app sometimes does not work. One app stopped mid-closed. I would recommend putting it off for a while And I will wait for my other computers. And FYI, I was updating a 2013 MacAir. I suspect each machine and vintage will react differently.

I updated yesterday. I have a very new iMac (March). Everything is working perfectly. I was scared this morning after reading of Photoshop and Lightroom problems, but the main gist of the article was related to older versions of PS and LR. I have a Creative Cloud account and am up to date. What the article says is that Catalina is a 64 Bit program and programs running at 32 bits or less will either not work or will have problems. So if you have an older version of PS or LR don't upgrade. I was also worried about my Quicken program, but articles I read said no problem if you are up to date on it. Sure enough, it worked perfectly. Just google for articles on Catalina and whatever program you are worried about i.e. Photoshop. there are several new articles that should pop up. Good advise though is to wait a week or two and see what comes up. I did like the ability to use my ipad as a second screen. Still trying out how to use it that way.
