Why are lenses that come with a camera disparagingly called ‘kit lens?’

The little 18-105 is a great lens, "kit lens" doesn't do it justice.....

I looked carefully at the lens mount with a magnifying glass and can no discernible damage. In fact if I hold it firmly in place it will auto focus, it just won't lock in place on the body. I've decided to look on it philosophically. A hard lesson learned, and honestly, I had made the decision to replace that lens with the 18-140mm zoom. It is what it is.

That replacement lens is a good choice. I have two - one for each of my D500s. I'd look into a good outfit that repairs lens before I trash it.

Sorry to hear the news but at least the "Tank" err D500 is still OK. BTW, apologies to the T90 folks for borrowing the term "Tank" from that camera. Seems like we have two cameras (in my biased mind) that fit the "tank" characterization.

The 'kit lens' part comes from the fact, obviously, that many cameras are sold as kits with the lens included either for better pricing or, more often it seems, simply for convenience. The 'disparagingly' part comes from the fact that many people want to convey the image that the lens they bought separately is somehow superior and makes them, naturally, a superior photographer. These are often the same people who insist at every opportunity that it's not the equipment that makes a difference, it's all about the photographer. Either contention is mostly a bunch of ego-stroking, IMO.

Bob, you aren't alone! I'll bet every one at one time or another has dropped a camera. If it still works, no one knows and you keep going. I speak from experience. BTW, I'll pay the postage if you want to send it to me. I've always wanted to take one apart. PM and let me know.

The lesson to be learned by the OP: did you have a quick connect plate like Arca or Peak or were you turning camera off a screw thread? (One previous poster already mentioned Arca).

I was using the mounting plate that came with
My manfrotto tripod. I was unlocking the mounting plate when I lost my grip on the camera.

Ok good. I love my Peak plate on a Arca-capable plate mounted on several of my tripods- standard and tabletop (but haven’t used them much yet:)

The White Feather taught me how to shoot. I thought I was a pretty fair shot but I saw Gunny Hathcock put rounds on target that made me just shake my head and put my weapon on "safe". The man was not human.

My husband dropped his fancy Nikon (do not remember the model) on a tile floor while we were in Arches NP! It had a dent near the strap fastener and worked okay for a while, but he did end up having to get a new camera. Luckily, the AF lens was not damaged. S**t happens.

Check your insurance npolicies. Homeowners, remters and auto policies sometimes will pay at least some of the costs.

Maybe in the US (where you could probably sue the manufacturer) LOL, Just kidding, …. Someone on the UHH suggested that while we have free health care in Canada, we only have one hospital, and if we require surgery, we have to do it ourselves with a discarded skate blade. That being said, I would suspect that your homeowners/automobile policy may cover it just like they do "stolen" golf clubs. I would just say be more careful...

I'm jealous that you got to meet him and I dare not tell my son.(just kidding). My son sent me several of his 500 meter targets while he was in basic (MRCD San Diego). They were all sub. " minute of angle" using an issue M16. And yes I was proud.
He had at first wanted to be a Sniper but, I told him, you know you can't sit still for 5 minutes. He ended up choosing to be a combat engineer. He got out in 2005 and is now a journeyman electrition. Oh, by the way, I wear a leather Aussie hat and I wear a white feather in the band in gunnies honor. When people ask me why a feather, I tell them it is in honor of Long Trang, they never know who I'm talking about.

"Good night Chesty, where ever you are."

Have never broken anything, but even if on a tripod always keep the camera strap around my neck. Of course that does not help if YOU fall. This happened in downtown L.A. one time (tripped over a sign base). Group leader called me a true photographer as I checked the camera before I checked me and got up.

When this happens the lens usually flies into several pieces. A knowlegable tech could probably align a few marks and snap it back together and it work??????.
