About an hour ago, I was taking my D500 with the 18-105 lens off my tripod and it slipped out of my grip. It fell on carpet. The lens came of and is trashed. I put my only other lens, a Nikon 50mm f/ 1.8 on the body. Thank God, the body is fine. Now I get to save for the Nikon 18-140 zoom.

Was the lens came off from the plastic mount only with out any other damage? So it's simple to save the lens, go to Amazon or ebay to look for a replacement (Metal mount) for the 18-105mm Nikon lens. I saw them in their site years ago. I had this lens before, it's a very good kit lens, but I don't like it's plastic mount, I later gave to some body. Good luck!

Bob, Don't throw that lens out yet. What damage do you see? I ask because I have repaired many of the 18-105's that have suffered the same fate (a popular lens to drop? probably just do to so many in use). Post a close-up, or PM me, either way is fine. If you plan on tossing it, I love to pick it up for the parts, if for no other reason (repairing and putting back in use is always the goal, and is often attainable).

I'd be glad to offer suggestion, fix/repair, or buy it for parts. If repairable, I have the parts, and donors, if not, I need the front lens glass for one I have that has a scratch from a a fall. It works just fine, but looks, well, it looks scratched.... and nobody liks that!!

One of the great things about being a US Marine is the training. If you drop your rifle, you immediately throw your body to the ground, under the falling rifle, saving the weapon from any damage. Works just as well with a camera.

Lesson learned. I had a similar experience with an expensive Canon lens. I dropped the lens while trying to change it in the field. It landed on the butt end and bent the mounting flange. I sent it to Canon for repair, (cheaper than buying a new lens). It has served me well for years. I am now more careful when changing lenses.

If only the breakable mount on the lens is broken, it is available and easily replaced. The composite lens mount was used to prevent serious damage when accidents happen. It of course is not used on heavy lens.

With respect I suspect the composite lens mount was used to save manufacturing costs with little to no thought given as to, what if the consumer drops the camera, this will save money in repairs.

Thanks, I will research a metal mount. It would be far less expensive than replacing the lens with the 18-150mm, especially as the 18-140mm doesn't gain that much in reach. I am saving for the 200-500mm f/5.6. Thanks

Thank you for your service. My oldest son did 2 tours in Iraq as a Marine.
SEMPER FI

One of my biggest regrets is not serving my country
I did however go on to become a professional welder for 30 years. The vast majority of those years, I welded Military products. I was. "Rosie the riveter."

May I give a rousing Semper Fi to your son from a Vietnam Marine who did two tours as well.

Why are lenses that come with a camera disparagingly called ‘kit lens?’

Doesn't matter with most of these policies. All that matters is that it was lost or damaged.

My brother was cutting trees and dropped one on his garage, insurance covered it, classified as an accident.
