Hi all,
Here I am trying to take pictures of a family of 5 moose (Grand Tetons), big male included at about 1/4 mile away with my Sigma 100-400 and around me, there were at least 6 or 7 people watching those animals as well.
As I started shooting (burst mode of course), many heads turned toward me with a "look", you know that look!. This is where I do not like my new D750 too much.
Is there a way to turn the shutter sound down as it it quite an obnoxious sound if you are not alone.
Thanks
Yes, you can turn the shutter sound completely off!

I don't have an answer to your question. I do have an observation however. The moose have heard that before and I'd be surprised if they did more than move their ears. The other visitors might have been overly sensitive.
Fairly long term D 750 user - may be wrong, but I don't believe there is a way to shut off shutter sound (as there is on my Mirrorless). Back in film days we used something called sound blimps - a quick search online shows they are still made and sold. Best of luck with the Moose!

Why did you care about their look? You just mind your own business and move on.

The people may have been wondering why there was no photographer behind the camera.

There is minimal shutter noise in the live view mode, but I don't know if you can shoot bursts. If you can, then focus tracking might be an issue and slow down everything. (Perhaps use manual focus if you're really far away and it doesn't matter so much.). I would defer to anyone who has tried this. I'm only thinking about possibilities.
The manual is a good place to start...
Having said that...look at at the "Mode" knob (page 6, and 34 in the manual)...there is a Q selection for Quiet Shutter-release. Another area to look at - press the menu button on the back of the camera and select the Custom Setting Menu and look at D1.
That's about all your can do to reduce shutter noises.

For some reason, the D750 does seem to have a fairly noisy shutter. My D750 is considerably louder than my D500 & D810. It doesn't bother me, though.

I noticed that in the camera store when I had the D750 and D810 side by side and compared them. I bought the D810, and it was a factor in the decision, though not the only factor. Each camera had some advantages over the other.

The heads of the people or the heads of the moose turned? If it was only the people, P on them. People do not count since you are not taking pictures of them. If it does not effect the moose or moose'es, I would not even bat an eyelash.

I used to take pictures of plays for a local theater group till someone in the audience complained about the "noise" from my camera. I guess he wasn't bothered by the A/C, coughing, talking, or traffic driving by. I was using either a D90 or D610.

I'd guess that it's not how loud the shutter is but the "suddenness" of it. I would also bet those people who turned around at the sound of the shutter were acting reflectively to that suddenness and at least a couple of them saw the camera and wished they had thought to bring one (camera) with them.
