D750 Shutter Noise

The federal agency that I worked for had an extensive photo department and owned a mouth watering array of Nikon cameras. They often photographed well known speakers, including the POTUS, as well as awards, presentations, etc. About 2 years before I retired, they totally switched out to Canon due to the shutter noise of Nikon and the near silence of Canon. That said, I like the sound of the shutter on my D850.

I still shoot with a D700. A Workhorse! And has all the shutter grace of an armored tank on a cobblestone street in Mogadishu. But it works. Loudly.

Hi all,

Here I am trying to take pictures of a family of 5 moose (Grand Tetons), big male included at about 1/4 mile away with my Sigma 100-400 and around me, there were at least 6 or 7 people watching those animals as well.

As I started shooting (burst mode of course), many heads turned toward me with a "look", you know that look!. This is where I do not like my new D750 too much.

Is there a way to turn the shutter sound down as it it quite an obnoxious sound if you are not alone.

Thanks

When we were in that area 35 years ago, the people watching the moose made more noise than my camera did. I'm glad that wasn't a problem in this case .... and don't worry about the people who don't know what a real camera is.

Yes, you can turn the shutter sound completely off!

Not totally correct. There are the the Q and Qc detents on the top left dial for "quiet" and "quiet continuous", but you still get some shutter noise. Due to the configuration of the shutter, you cannot make it totally silent. You can on mirrorless though.

I tried to make my D750 silent, but quiet mode is as close as you will get.

If camera shutter noise is an issue, I'd consider using a blimp. When I'm asked to photograph during radio interviews, I use one purchased from B and H. They significantly reduce camera noise.

A quarter mile away? Thats 500 yards! Give me a break!

As already said, the moose likely don't care. As for the people, tell them I'd rather make a little shutter sound than "your" farting sound! (Probably safer to say belching sound.) LoL

Next time just tell them you are on assignment from National Geographic and that if they write the magazine they will likely receive a complimentary issue for their trouble. Be sure to do this with a straight face.

In most cases, not ones like live interviews of course, it's the fact that the is unexpected and nothing more. You would probably get looks were you photographing during a rock concert

First of all, it's not the shutter making the noise, it's the mirror slapping up and back down for each frame. If you use "Live View," (there's an LV button on the back of the camera) you lock the mirror up and use the LCD screen to compose the shot. Especially useful for indoor shooting at weddings or performances.

The mirror is the main noise maker but in reality, both contribute.

Shutter noise is kind of an inclusive term. Like "the sound of a car starting up"=the engine starting, not the car and not going up or down

I had another thought. Every time you see a press conference on TV, you hear the constant shutter/mirror noise of the DSLRs that the photographers are shooting in burst mode. I can see a time when such cameras will be banned from such events. Just a thought.

There is a quiet mode on the release dial but it is not much quieter than the normal release modes.

Maybe.

Some politicians love the sound. It makes them feel important.

There is, or was?, a group in California that could be purchased just to follow someone around. All they did was take alot of fake photos and machine gun flashes.

That was only to make the rest of J Q.Public crowd around the person and make it seem like there the person is special. LoL
