We are slowly "plasticizing" our planet, pollution from oil knows no bounds, don't like plastics in general, an insideous plague on our global ecosystem, but hey, a few folks get rich and stay rich from the profis of the "black gold", and the hell with the rest of us..............

We have definitely 'plasticized' our planet AND finding working options for all our plastic products is going to take major effort and $$$'s! Just start counting all the things made from plastic in your wardrobe, home, car, office, etc. Now find environmentally friendly products with which to replace them...

Every time I go to the doctor, I am so grateful to have plastic. Flexible plastic saves me much pain and discomfort as well as a likely hospital stay. Plastics are wonderful they save money for a whole variety of reasons and make many beneficial technologies possible. Think a bit about the materials used in 1850.

There a compostable plastics. Paper comes from tress grown in managed forests so not much of a problem either.

I am also grateful oil. It provides energy and raw chemical stock required for many materials including life saving drugs.

Those who worry about man-made climate change should quit worrying. After carefully study of the records since 1900 the weather 50 years from now is almost certainly to be with in the ranges observed for the last century. As the sun appears to be quieting a cooler period is likely.

We accumulate hundreds of plastic bags but we reuse them for all sorts of things, such as putting used cat litter in them. We then burn them, either in our wood stove in winter or outside, weather permitting. We shop at Aldi's a lot so we use a bunch of cardboard boxes. The cats love them.

Brigantine NJ did the same thing this past May. They banned the plastic bags that we are used to seeing, and encouraged shoppers to bring in their own bags. Problem was they instituted this plan starting Memorial day when the tourist season started! They were selling a lot of paper, cloth, and a recyclable type of plastic bag to shopping tourists. While I applaud what they did, the timing really sucked for thousands of summer visitors and tourists who were unaware.

I haven't heard about that "great idea," but I hope you're kidding.

here in Salem Or we had to go with our own bags or pay 5c for a paper bag.
I always went for paper bags as I recycled, (bags under the sink for garbage).

I still don't understand why the stores have to charge all of a sudden?

Dutchess County is supposed to be joining Ulster County in doing that as well Jerry. Not sure if it is October 2019 or after the New Year.

I would like to know why the store HAS TO BUY THE PAPER BAGS FROM THE COUNTY, something doesn't smell right there.

Ulster County, NY, where I live, no longer allows stores to give customers plastic bags. They can bring their own bag, or they can buy a paper bag for five cents. Looking further into this, it seems that stores have to buy the bags from the County, and that's why they charge the customers. The bags have the name of the store, but they also have County info about recycling printed on them. I'll pursue this further to find out what really going on.

I've never liked plastic bags. The first I saw of them was in England in 1974 (I think). We "caught up" years later.
Ulster County, NY, where I live, no longer allows ... (show quote)

That is uncalled for!
There is no reason to insult anyone here at the forum.

As for this tree-hugging Hippie Crap I chimed in a couple of pages ago. The bottom line is I can do all the recycling possible. My attempts to save the Earth for the next generation's become futile. If the next person isn't doing their part, there may be one less plastic water bottle and styrofoam cup in the landfill next to the high rises in downtown. We all are responsible. Fifty lashes for everyone. Oh wait. That whip is made from cow's leather. I hear them coming. The animal rights activists are on the march.

A few towns on the South Jersey shore have banned them as well. Takes centuries before they disintegrate in the landfill. Not to mention the harm to wildlife and sea creatures .

How many plastic bags and straws could be made from the plastic in 1 automobile?
How many from 1 camera?
What about infusion bags and medical tubing?
If plastic is so bad then never buy an automobile, any photographic equipment or refuse all medical equipment and supplies made with evil plastic.
Bags and straws are such a minuscule portion of plastic waste.

So true. But, have you ever seen a photo of a sea turtle with a camera or automobile embedded in it's nose ??? No adult (or child) really needs straws. If you think you do, there is always the old sippy cup.

I saw a video of some conservationists rescuing a sea turtle. It broke my heart seeing then remove a plastic straw from its nostril. Since then I have never used a straw. Even if I ordered a slushie, I gulped it and got freeze brain. A small price to pay to rescue wildlife. We really don't need plastic straws!

Amen! That was the video I was referring to.
Freeze brain comes natural for me anyway.

Since when, Architect 1776, does being concerned for the planet mean one is an America hater????

I have no problem with discontinuing plastic bags, but another gov't intrusion because "...stores have to buy the bags from the County, and that's why they charge the customers. The bags have the name of the store, but they also have County info about recycling printed on them." Why can't the stores buy their paper bags ANYWHERE? Why do they have to have the name of the store on them which just increases the cost?
