Ulster County, NY, where I live, no longer allows stores to give customers plastic bags. They can bring their own bag, or they can buy a paper bag for five cents. Looking further into this, it seems that stores have to buy the bags from the County, and that's why they charge the customers. The bags have the name of the store, but they also have County info about recycling printed on them. I'll pursue this further to find out what really going on.

I've never liked plastic bags. The first I saw of them was in England in 1974 (I think). We "caught up" years later.

It is considered far less harmful to the environment to manufacture plastic than the alternatives mentioned in this discussion, paper bags and reusable cloth bags. Growing cotton in particular requires a massive amount of water and pesticides. I first learned of this while driving and listening to the BBC while on vacation in the UK. The problem is what we do with plastic once it is manufactured, and there is no excuse for not recycling as much as we can. But as usual, people will be people, and this stuff ends up in landfills and in the ocean.

Check these out regarding cotton. I have since learned that there are now people who will not wear clothing made from this fiber.

not a fan of the conversion plastic to paper. More energy to produce paper bags. More energy to transport them since they are bulkier and heavier. I know that they are unsightly litter, but for the planet, plastic bags are a better option. What we need now is trees. The more trees, the less CO2 and less pollution.

If you look around the world, you will find that many countries deep-six their waste or use it as landfill to build out the shore or fill in bays. They are not particularly fastidious about what goes in the water. Also, many cultures overseas just throw waste behind their dwellings. The bags are carried by the wind.

Bags are not the problem. People are. I'll take plastic over paper any day. I do agree that there should be a switch to the more bio-degradable plastics would be a wise move.
