I don't even know where my sun shade is for the 18-200VR2 zoom. I don't use it.

I watch a ton of photography videos and a lot of them shoot with the sun shade in the storage or reverse position. For the life of me I can't understand any scenario where this would be the way to go. Besides not blocking the sun or help protecting the front lens it just gets in the way. What am I missing here.

It's not the "way to go" for anything in particular. Just a storage position, and too lazy to turn it around or take it off.

I don't know--why do kids wear baseball caps backwards when we all know one of the advantages of the bill is to keep the sun out of our eyes and rain off our glasses? I think some of the backwards lens shades comes happens as a fashion statement but others for a lot of different reasons. Myself, sometimes I'm caught seeing a great shot but haven't gotten out my camera. In that case I quickly pull out the camera from my bag, turn it on, take off the lens cap and shoot (I leave my settings on the camera in the most flexible way possible so if I have to shoot fast I won't have to worry about exposure. Often this makes the difference between getting a usable pictures and not. But who cares? Although I do think the backwards lens shade looks awkward...

Other than difficult sometimes using a polarizer, you noticed something that you correctly identified as not making sense. My hood saved my lens and camera when I fell on it. If it wasn't for the hood, it would have broken the filter and lens and possibly the lens mount. As it was, it took 20 minutes to get the filter loose after finding a large enough rubber band on the ship. No permanent damage; it only takes a deformation of a ten thousand or two to stick a filter fairly tight. No doubt in my mind, my photographic portion of our Greek inlands cruise would have been over if it wasn't for the lens hood (it was the only lens on that cruise).

It’s like wearing your baseball cap backwards, defeats the purpose of the visor.

Maybe you should go home Bill, just took a look at his site, I have never seen you post work that comes close.

When I first got my camera I used a UV filter all the time and would have to take off the lens hood and reverse it to remove the UV filter and install the polarizer then put the shade back on.
All this got a little tiresome so now I got a magnet filter mount and take off the hood and just snap on the polarizer and replace the hood sometimes backwards to turn the polarizer.
The camera still takes the same great pictures as it did with the UV filter.

Reversed position - quite obvious whether it's there or not.

I find it IRONIC that so many critics of me and any comment I make, are people I put on my ignore list months if not years ago. Traderjohn for ONE example. My initial response on this post was to a guy who criticized some one for "CAREING what others might think....and then he told him his opinion& "What he thought about the matter.. Funny...NO!! odd...Yes. Also odd the fleet of psychoanalysts that followed, All know ALL. JUST 'TEDIOUS"" you few, you happy few....I've spent too much time juxtapositioned near Marines, And you're a sad example!! I suggest you add me to your IGNORE list...youve been on mine for ages!!
