I'm not sure just what image you are talking about.

And I often wondered why there are people who wear their baseball caps backwards. That sunshade is there for a reason and I use it all the time.

I almost always use my lens hood to block light and help protect my lenses which has proven valuable several times over the years. If I was seeing amateurs shooting with their lens hood on backwards I wouldn't think a whole lot about it but the people I have been seeing do this are people that give workshops and shoot all over the world. I give a lot more weight to the decisions they make than I do amateurs. I have been into photography for fifty years and was just wondering if there is something I am missing. By observing this practice on several occasions by professional photographers I just thought I would ask if anyone knew of a good reason to do this.

I know that it is in the backward position to store in your camera bag and I also know you may not find it useful to use it. What I am interested in finding out is there some benefit to having it on your lens while shooting if it is in the storage position. I personally can't think of one.

Do it all the time. It, the visor, protects the back of my neck when I'm shooting...sometimes long hours...and, conversely, gets in the way when worn "properly." <shrug> YMMV.

Oh, I *do* use my lens hoods as intended, out of habit. Long ago had an incident where one saved a lens/camera from damage from a fall. BUT, I recently picked up a 24-70 f4 Z lens off EBay (carefully putting on my tin-foil hat now that I've said that...) and it did not come with a hood. Didn't think much of it, other than I need to get one down the line. It (the camera/lens combo) shoots fine.

The first time they hit the front element on something I believe they might just rethink not having it on correctly. I find that on some of my lenses that it is just in the way of the zoom ring. I could see maybe forgetting it and not turning it around but I am seeing too many of them doing this and cannot see the logic in it.

Mine stays on backwards until I need it. The damage issue has two aspects - yes protects hitting straight on but makes it more likely to snag/hit from the side. I think it must be a pretty leisurely day to worry about this kind of thing.

Not the image, looking at the camera the person is carrying.
Geeze, where did you come up with that???

I shoot with a lot of filters which are mounted in a holder (I use large square filters)
For this reason I often do not use my lens shade. I do carry it in my camera bag for occasions when I need it.

Isn't the lens hood on an EF 400 f/5.6L built in and not removable or reversable?

Not on the II version......it is sold separately and has a window at the bottom to open to adjust a CPL if one is used and it must be reversed before the lens can be installed into it's specially built case.

As long as you use the lens hood correctly, why do you care what others do?!
I for one always use lens hoods correctly.

I don't think the OP actually cares about whether or not it is used incorrectly but he does have the right to make an observation about what is happening.

With respect of course your post was simply wasted cyber space.

He was talking about the f/5.6 Prime not the 100-400.

I have ruined too many images by zooming out wide, not noticing any vignetting in the finder and ending up with a vignetted image I had to crop to use. Unless I need the sunshade for its intended purpose, I reverse it if I am zooming out.

lens hood gives you a lot more protection

your lenses.

It’s like wearing your baseball cap backwards, defeats the purpose of the visor.

It all depends how you look at it. Keep sun off the back of the neck?

I watch a ton of photography videos and a lot of them shoot with the sun shade in the storage or reverse position. For the life of me I can't understand any scenario where this would be the way to go. Besides not blocking the sun or help protecting the front lens it just gets in the way. What am I missing here.

I'm such an amateur I don't even know what you're referring to. Can you please post a visual example?
