I am largely responsible for handling photos submitted by members of a women’s organization. Photos are compiled to go into a scrapbook at year’s end. Selecting the good ones is easy. Most are blurry, out of focus, and poorly composed. They are 99% cell phone produced. There ain’t enough photoshop to save the majority.

A cell phone is a phone; a camera is a camera. And ne’er the Twain shall meet.

If I attend an event they are involved in, I bring a pocketable Canon S100. And I don’t have worry about it ringing during the event.

ArtzDarkroom - Pay little attention to camera snobs who are ‘just phoning it in’ and don’t know that camera phones, such as the one on my iPhone X have caught up and are definitely competitive with traditional cameras. I like the iPhone camera just fine, but I have to admit the camera on my realtor sister’s Samsung phone may have a slight edge. /Ralph

hardly caught up to what any of the top cameras are capable of. Not even close to it. They can take a nice snapshot for sure but...

I'm hardly a Millennial, but this Gray Panther bought a Google Pixel 2 last year, specifically for the camera. It's what I grab for pictures of my cats, or closeups of things in my garden. It's great for indoors, and short videos, and pretty darn good in low light. I think other phones, especially iPhone might be catching up, but I'll buy another Google Pixel when it's time to upgrade....

And yes, I use a DSLR too. I have a Nikon D7100 with several lenses that I use mostly for birds. But there are situations where the phone camera is actually better....

This past winter I attended an indoor car show. I took my Sony PS to take pics. I also had my Samsung S-5. Out of curiosity I decided to take several pictures of the same cars with the Sony (16 mp) and the Samsung. The Sony is a great little PS and I expected it would easily outdo the Samsung. When I transferred the photos to my computer, I was surprised that the Samsung did as good as the Sony and, in fact, did a much better job handling the shadows (I did not use flash). I would think the newer Samsungs would be much better at taking photos than my old S-5. I didn't print the pictures, so I don't know what they would look like enlarged to 8x10 or 11x14. My guess is that either phone will give great pictures.

Are you angry with me? Sounds like this subject upset you. It was addressed to the younger crowd. Are you among the younger crowd?

...not in the "younger crowd" by a long shot, but I've shot some good stuff with my "phone" through the years, and use it quite a bit for what I call flat work (where DOF isn't a high priority). I really like my Samsung product, have no reference to Apple nowadays, but am relegated to a Note 8 and won't move up for a year or so, at least. I've heard, however, that the Samsung 10 version with its 3 lenses is quite good. YMMV.

...and, just to show skeptics that good results can be achieved, here's one using an S4 iphone years ago...of course, I helped it a bit, but not much!

NIKON! This gray panther is reminding you that this is a photography site that most people will agree that if you desire to take real photos then you should use a camera, not a telephone. If you want to know who the winner is between iphone or samsung,, you should find out which one looks best to you.

A telephone?
A cell phone has the function of a telephone but it is not a telephone.
Wow!!

Motorola's newest phone has a 48 megapixel** camera. Does that pucker anyone's cheeks? I don't know what the asterisks mean exactly as I could find the definition in the ad. I have a MOTO Z2 and an iphone 6. I don't take too many pictures with either except for convenience when I don't have my Nikon D7100 with me but I can't really see too much of a difference for basic stuff. I prefer the MOTO for operability and it does sport dual 12 MP front cameras and I think it does some kind of stitching for more resolution. Like most others I prefer the DSLR.

The best camera in a cell phone is the latest one released. Manufacturers have realized, you can tell by the advertising, that two things sell phones, snob appeal (i-phone) and great cameras, i-phone and Samsung. Kind of ironic, you buy a new phone to get a better camera.

Poor composition really has nothing to do with the machine taking the image...

I prefer my iphone 8 to my husband's droid...plus lightroom mobile and snapseed make for quick edits without a steep learning curver

Well (a deep subject), it is said that the Samsungs take better photos than the iPhones and their megapixels are higher. My husband doesn't work at it, so his photos (Samsung) make it hard to tell; my iPhone 8 Plus gives me wonderful photos and I know what to do. The problem with his Samsung (it's not too old), is that every other time there is an update, something always gets messed with. My iPhone always runs smoothly and I have a ton of stuff on it. I better knock on wood.

My daughter says she can do more and better with her canon alpha 360 than her Samsung 8.
Would that be true?
