That's a reason many Americans don't want single payer healthcare.
but MOST of us would like to see some kind of universal care -- US pays twice what any other developed country pays and has worse results than any of them -- just look at the reaction in UK when trump ignorantly said he'd like to see private insurance interfere in the NHS. no other country would choose to adopt the american system

GovCo can fund universal coverage through individuals as far as I care. There has to be some market competition in it. There oughta be a law that medical providers have to provide rate cards for their services. It's all a total racket, now, with the insurance companies and Big Pharma and Big Hospital chains consolidating so tightly. What was once competitive to a small degree isn't. It's a small oligopoly, bordering on monopoly, and the politicians are complicit.
The worst thing we ever did was let the clinics and hospitals handle the insurance claims directly with insurers. The result is, we never see what it really costs. If most people saw un-coded, plain English, itemized invoices for what they are currently receiving, they would vomit! Then we would have a revolt, and riots in the streets.
Apria once billed my late father-in-law directly for some supplies that, in any other industry, would cost about $50. The bill was for $1856 for some basic tubing, filters, a tin can, some elastic, and molded plastic.
Been scanning thru these responses and my comment is:
Can’t we just laugh at a cartoon?

Our GPs in the UK are overstretched and now only allow you to raise one health problem at a time - so if you have an accident and break an arm and a leg you have to have 2 separate appointments lol!
Yeah maybe, but you get free healthcare.

Is that FREE as in nobody needs to pay for it? The doctors, hospitals, staff and so on all work for free? It would seem that somebody has to pay for it. Nobody works for free?
Oh wait!!! It is only free to those who don't work and contribute nothing. Those of us who have worked since we were kids, those of us who pay taxes are the ones paying for it. I get it now.

Yeah, we know all that. You can't say anything on UHH without somebody getting offended.

Who was offended? Certainly not me. I was only pointing out common sense.

And I only brought it up because the Brits, Canucks, Aussies and others like to mention their "free healthcare". Anybody who knows anything realizes it's not "free", somebody pays. You being in California will pay more than others. I was born, raised and lived in California for 65 years. I know about the taxes and prices. I'm just happy I moved away before I started withdrawing my 401K - didn't have to pay those California taxes on it.
