Wow, steady hand, using a tablet or mouse?
A quick way to stay in the lines without a mask is to use the selection tools. The brush will not go outside the selection. Or if you pick select and mask after selecting, there are many refinement options for the selection that can take a lot of getting used to. Refine edge is amazing. Feathering a couple if pixels will soften the edge. Output to selection to paint right on that same layer or to a mask for greater control.
Thank you for the suggestions. When I said mask I was thinking selection. I use Affinity and am working g through the Affinity Workbook. It has really reinforced ways of making localized adjustment as easily as possible but your suggestions are very clear and should be helpful. I did this with a mouse. I have considered getting a tablet but never could makeup my mind. I have a cat that lays on the desk when I work. He likes to lick my mouse hand! Now that makes things difficult!
