This may be strange but please let me ask? People say use gaffers tape, electrical tape. What do you do with it, wrap it around the lens?

I would just purchase a new lens hood and forget about using tape, just my response. A picture is worth a thousand words, if someone would post a photo of using the tape method that would be nice. Thanks to all who answer....

Here is the 'Repair' I have made to the lens Hood for my Sigma 24~70 f/2.8 lens. Been in use since (1970/80 ?) cannot remember exactly. I used green tape , to show better than black in this photo'.

Edges on tab worn differently. Using other side when reversing.

BTW I tried filing tab and notch and building up with nail polish. Neither worked so went with lens cap keeper. It works.

But I put my hood on and reverse just about equally. Once on and once reversed. How do they wear differently?

Who knows?

Maybe because the torque is in a different direction?

Gaffer tape! I keep a piece on the hood and reuse it multiple times. Unlike electrical tape, gaffer tape leaves no residue and can be reused many times.

NO ELECTRICAL TAPE. This tape leaves a lot of residue and doesn't stick that well. I don't even use electrical tape for electrical needs. Use gaffer tape or get a new hood.

First try to determine the cause- spring tension is inadequate in the bayonet mechanism in the hood- missing screws or shims etc? If you can't tension it up to say put, just repace the entire hood/shade- the are not terribly expensive.

Tape is only a good fix in an emergency situation. Even the best tapes leave residue that may get into your camera or end up on your lens. If you shim it up too tightly, you can wrench off part of your lens while trying to dislodge it. Sticky lens shades can add additional torque when you try to get them off. I do keep all kinds of tape in my "emergency kit- gaffer tape, Gorilla tape and low-tack masking tapes but I don't consider any of them a permanent solution.

You camera and lenses are expensive items, why bog them down with makeshift fixes?

Ive found putting on a bayonet mounted lens hood can apply a fair bit of pressure on the manual focus ring ( actually turning it ). I'm worried about damaging the motor that drives it or something else. I have replaced all my bayonet mounted hoods with cheap screw in collapsible rubber ones. They work fine.

Just a tiny piece put it on the inside of your hood on thread part it will make your hood fit tight and you will not see it! It works

Don't use electrical tape, it will leave a residue. Good quality gaffer tape will not. A small piece at the top and bottom should be all you need. You can try just at the top but if the hood is really worn you'll need two to keep it from 'flapping'.
And this should only be a temporary fix. A new hood is the way to go.

Remember your putting the electrical tape on the hood not the lens. So no residue will be left on the lens. Mine has lasted 5 years but I don’t take the hood off the lens

I put the gaffer tape on the outside of the hood and overlap it onto the lens barrel

Keeps dropping off while I’m working. It’s a bayonet style. Tried a clip on but it didn’t fit right. It only falls off when it’s in use not when it’s reversed on the lens for storage.

Look at it sternly, point your finger at it and repeat - STAY, STAY, STAY! Or just replace it.

Don't remember how many cameras with hoods I have owned, but a bunch. Never had one not stay mounted when properly attached.

Teflon Tape that I use for securing pvc to metal when doing irrigation. It's normally white, you can wrap around end of lens 5 or 6 times pulling it tight and stretching the tape. Just break it off /tape/ and it works great. Once you've taken the lens hood off a dozen or so times it wears out /the tape/ if the edges are sharp, if not last forever. Just replace when worn out.. It also works great for filters as well but only wrap once around. Filters won't stick this way either. Find in the plumbing department at any store....
