How can I make my lens hood stay on?

Keeps dropping off while I’m working. It’s a bayonet style. Tried a clip on but it didn’t fit right. It only falls off when it’s in use not when it’s reversed on the lens for storage.

I replaced mine. Works fine now.

After mine began falling off I started using gaffer tape and it works great. It leaves no residue or stickiness on the lens or lens hood. Comes in wide range of prices, I use the less expensive 2" wide rolls.

Consider Black Electical tape that I have used. Possibly, also consider using a screw in type hood into filter threads.

Gaffer tape - very inexpensive at about $5/roll from B&H or your local art store - is a great suggestion.

Gaffer tape should be in everyone's camera bag!

Be really careful where you put electrical tape, even the premium 3M types. It is formulated to be elastic in order to make weather resistant seals, and to be applied in long continuous lengths and overlapping layers. The adhesive is famous for degrading and oozing out from between the two surfaces, and the substrate degrades and becomes very sticky over time. The long term result is usually pretty much a gooey mess.

Gaffers tape has very strong adhesive that will not leave a residue, so that it can be used for temporary installations. It is also very strong in the lengthwise direction, but readily torn to length across its width. But prepare to pay quite a bit more than you would expect to pay for similarly sized "duct tape."

So I have to tape it on every time I use it? I think replacing it with an identical one sounds better to me of the suggestions so far

I think that you would judiciously apply the tape to serve as a shim so everything would fit together tighter.

You stated that it locked in place for storage. With that in mind, are you sure you're getting it locked in place when deploying it? Sometimes they need a little more force to get them to seat fully.

foto, I've used both OEM and cheap copy hoods for years. They are thin and can become distorted. If you've got a 3rd party, maybe try an OEM hood. Or, perhaps, as you say the one you have is is worn out. For the OEM prices, they should be better than they are--especially as an extra cost item on many lower priced lenses.

You could keep the gaffer tape piece attached to the hood when not in use, but I don't like tape anywhere near my lenses.

It doesn’t really lock any more when deploying. I was shooting an hour ago and it dropped off and somebody pointed it out to me.

I wonder if it is the hood or the lens causing it to be loose or maybe both.

On this one, I'd use Teflon plumber's tape. In black if you can find it. The thinnest shim you can find for most applications.
