I recently purchased a refurbished Nikon nifty 50 (f 1.8 - f 16) and am making myself use it. I also have a 50mm that came w the pre-owned canon 70D I bought a few years ago. They are my only primes. I can't always zoom w my legs so tend to rely heavily on my zoom lenses. This post is of images taken recently - in last month at least. If you don't have a prime, you might consider selecting only 1 focal length on a zoom lens and shooting only that focal length for Sue's challenge. It's an exercise in self discipline if you tend to use zooms because I've tried it and I keep wanting to zoom.

I dived on a reef covered in marine life on Friday and again on Sunday. On Friday I used a NIKKOR 85mm lens. On Sunday I switched to a NIKKOR 105mm.

Most of my lenses are prime lenses. Very often I use 50mm or the 55mm with adapter on NEX-6.
Here is one with 55mm NAI Nikkor f/3.5.

What did you put behind the flowers? The blurry reflection is very pretty.

What an outstanding set! It's so neat that you are able to combine diving with photography - I don't think I've ever seen these types of images on the Hog!

Hooks in to my issue of the moment. I am considering a Nikon 35mm 1.8 AFS (D3200). Versus 40mm 2.8 micro(macro). Loosing the light of course. Would I better off with the 35 mm and add extension tube for macro, and have the advantage of the larger F (4x light of 2.8)?

I've played with the extension tubes on my 50mm 1.8G. My original thinking was the same that I wanted the additional light from the 1.8. The problem that I didn't take into account is that the depth of field with a 1.8 is already shallow. When I added the extension tubes my dof got so small that it was extremely difficult to get exactly what I wanted in focus. Next time I try it out I'll probably go closer to a f4 - f8.

Pg 4 - Pat, these are really stunning images. To be honest, I didn't
think you'd be able to achieve the bokeh with a prime at such a
close distance...guess I'll have to start saving my pennies!

Pg 5 - I always enjoy your images, Max, which are truly beautiful.
Underwater photography, I'm sure, would require a good fast, prime
lens...gorgeous series.

Recently I hosted a Challenge "Shoot wide open" for which I use my Canon EF 50mm 1.8 STM that I received for Christmas..I used it Again on Friday Night..At the Riverfest for a few Shots.

Here are a few from the Shoot wide Open Challenge all taken with the 50mm on Aperture Priority. (AV)

It's also very frustrating at times. The animals are moving as is the water, me and my camera. With strobes, my fastest shutter speed is 1/250 so I have to try to be as still as possible. I like nudibranchs. They move very slowly. :)
