Read "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" and visit the cemetary mentioned in the book. Never saw anything like it. Great town, have fun.

Wormsloe Historic Site...very cool and photogenic. Over in Beaufort there’s a restaurant named The Filling Station...looks like a dump from the outside that needs about 5 steps up to be a biker bar...it’s actually a family place and the food is fabulous. Call and check the menu before you go...there’s exactly one entree per night but it tastes great, has enough food for leftovers the next day, and was something like $5 a plate when we were there a few years back.

Take the trolley tour for sure. You can get on and off as long as you want at each stop.
... and be sure to have breakfast or lunch at The Little Duck Diner.

...going to Savannah ...

I rediscovered Savannah last year ... was stationed in Hinesville, GA in the late '60s ... Savannah was the only place close by ... I don't remember the city being as lovely as it is now ... we used to eat at the "Pirates' House", it's not at the same location but is still a great place to visit ... as an aside - I discovered a drink called "The Dark & Stormy" while eating there, have been hooked ever since ...

Carriage ride around the town ... dinner cruise ... every square has a different feel to it ...

We will be going back!

Was just there. Great shots all around. Visit the Georgia Railroad Museum in Savannah. On Tybee you will see the largest and smallest lighthouses in Georgia, just a couple of miles apart. Ft. Pulaski is a really nice stop and someone's suggestion about Beaufort, SC is good advice also. Another town that is getting a lot of attention lately is Bluffton, SC and it is near Beaufort. I just went through the Savannah Wildlife Preserve two weeks ago and did not see much activity of birds or gators. A little farther north is Donnelley Wildlife Preserve and there we saw eagles, spoonbills, egrets, and tons of alligators. When you are in Savannah you may want to have lunch at The Lady and Sons Restaurant (Paula Dean's Place).

If you are into wildlife visit Savannah National Wildlife Reserve just across the border on Hwy 17. Great bird pictures at the rockery in Port Royal, SC. Good street scene's on the riverfront in Savannah.

I have visited Savannah but did not get to see all of the interesting places. I did visit Fort Pulaski, which is an interesting place to visit. Gators are interesting. On the Fort Stewart Reservation I have stood on the bank of a lake and had one swim right up at my feet and stick its eyes out of the water and look at me. I threw a rock at one once that was sitting on some Lilly pads and have never seen anything move so fast.

Thanks for the great feedback!
Definitely taking a trip to Tybee. Maybe dinner too. Wildlife Reserve on list. Bonaventure Cemetery a great suggestion--thanks! Fort Pulaski stop is included. I like the Beaufort suggestion. Particularly the Old Town and the Cypress Wetlands.
Idaho...been married for 43 years. No plans for another.
Bill, can you tell me about your trip? PM if you like.
VietVet from Brooklyn...did you go yet? And if you did, can you also share.
Thanks to all.

I did go for a few days. But stood around the main parts of historic Savannah. Beautiful park squares, 31 I believe. The architect and history are fantastic. A suggestion about eating is to stay away from Paula Deens restaurant “Lady and Sons” the food was awful. Southern cooking at its worst. What a disappointment and I got sick. I’ve got an iron stomach. Another problem was the sand gnats as my wife and brother in law were bitten up badly. We had a couple of days of on and off storms. The oak trees covered in Spanish moss are very picturesque and are everywhere. Bonadventure cemetery is a good choice another is Wormsloe Historic Park a short drive away. Be aware most businesses and eateries start late in the morning and close early in the evening. Definitely a slow pace. Did a few local tours that gave a great history lesson but not interesting for photographic purposes. Still all and all a good time. Alcoholic beverages are everywhere and open drinking in clear containers are allowed all around town. Unfortunately I do not drink but the others in my group did enjoy this aspect. I’ll post a few images in a day or so.

PS I took a 24-70 zoom with my as suggested by a friend. You will need a wider lens such as a 16-35. Next time!

You will be very close to Beaufort South Carolina, lots of history in this town. It was occupied by the British during the Revolution and was not destroyed by the Northern aggressors during the Civil War. If you visit Beaufort you just have to take a horse drawn carriage tour of the old homes.

Still fighting the Civil War?
