Wife staying home. Going with daughter & grandson during spring break.

Yes the DSLR does take great pix and I use it often, but looking for covenience less bulk. Will be doing lots of walking.

After all the feedback, I'll take the S9900.

Again thanks to all.

Skip Uber/lyft. DC has great tour buses that stop at every spot, just about and with the right pass you can get on and off. When I was there, you could buy a pass that worked on all 4 routes. Then, if you want to go somewhere the bus doesn't stop, think about Uber or Lyft.

I second this suggestion. I have used the hop-on-hop-off bus to visit other cities, and it is a great way to get around to all the major sights, if that is the purpose of your trip. Usually you can buy a full-day ticket, sit in the outdoor upper deck in good weather (a good vantage point for street shots), and you can choose your sights as you roll up on them.

I live in the DC area, and the Metro has been a nightmare recently -- lots of long-overdue repair work, including temporary closing of lines and single-tracking. Uber, Lyft and cabs can become expensive if you take lots of short trips. The bus also gives you a chance to rest between walks. I would take both cameras (assuming your daughter or grandson may use one) to get the best shots you can. You're coming at a good time for foliage and color -- you'll miss the cherry blossoms (peaking next week), but lots of other blooms will be out. Enjoy!

Go with the Nikon Coolpix. I have one and find it a very good companion when great reach, sharp IQ and compact size are the parameter of concern. "Don't leave home without it"

These type questions always amaze me. I don’t know the mbmrshp count on this forum, but let’s suppose there are 8K. If 1 o/o respond, that would mean there were abt 80 giving an opinion. Unless there is a clear cut, overwhelming rationale/choice to be made, it is reasonable to assume that the variety of responses will pretty much cover the waterfront. How in the world will an OP ever get to a consensus of an answer, to make an informed choice? Ten guys/gals like Coke, ten like Pepsi. Ten rednecks prefer Ford, ten wouldn’t be caught dead in a Ford, Chevy is the only way to their grave. And on and on, ad infinitum. Just one of my “life mysteries.”

I'd bring the D5300 and Sigma... just in case you run into DJT and have a chance to get some good photos!

the coolpix will make it easier for you to get around because you will be doing a lot of walking; bonus, you can run away from the muggers faster.

Seems like many members are asking which equipment to take on their trips. Many great answers were given.

Now it's my turn.

Will be going to DC towards the end of April. Will be flying and to get around the city, will be taking the subway, or whatever it's called, and Uber/Lyft.

I have 2 choices - my Nikon D5300 w/Sigma 17-70mm Contemporary or my wife's Nikon Coolpix S9900. I'm leaning towards the S9900 only because of it's size. It's a great piece of equipment.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Jay

I would take the Coolpix. I have the S9600 and I enjoy how easy it is to carry around and also it produces great images.

Take the Coolpix and enjoy yourself rather than fussing around with a heavier camera. You’ll likely be taking travel photos, and the Coolpix will do a great job.

Funny even though jayw has decided what camera to take, this thread will continue. All those who don’t bother to read the prior posts will comment not knowing that jayw has already decided which camera to take. And those who disagree with his choice will post trying to change his mind!

My message to jayw: Un-watch this thread now. Have fun and enjoy your trip!

He is taking the S9900.

See the top of page 3 for his decision.
