Seems like many members are asking which equipment to take on their trips. Many great answers were given.

Now it's my turn.

Will be going to DC towards the end of April. Will be flying and to get around the city, will be taking the subway, or whatever it's called, and Uber/Lyft.

I have 2 choices - my Nikon D5300 w/Sigma 17-70mm Contemporary or my wife's Nikon Coolpix S9900. I'm leaning towards the S9900 only because of it's size. It's a great piece of equipment.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Jay

If I were Jay I would take The Nikon CoolpixS9900 for its 30x optical zoom, VR and compactness. My 3 cents.
Have fun.

You will likely be walking a lot to view the sights in DC. Having the option of Uber/Lyft to get to and from the Metro Stations will help. However, based on my experience with several trips to DC, I think the compact Coolpix camera would be a great choice. You probably don't want to carry around more weight than you have to.

On a crowded subway, the smaller, the better.
I've witnessed many times tourists not having a good time because they were carrying too much very bulky and heavy camera gear on them.

I would leave the wife home and take both cameras.

Smaller + lighter = better. You’ll be happier, your wife will be happier, and you’ll have all the range you could possibly want.

If he does, who is going to carry the 2nd camera?

Never been an issue for us.

I would not dare ask that question. Fear, common sense and being married 48 years...

Take the Coolpix. With an effective focal length of 25-750mm, it will give you more options than the 17-70.

Oh boy, let's do the effective focal length theories!

Hopefully by this time the OP can appreciate the field of view his setups are capable of.

We visited several years ago, and I’m glad I took the D810 w/24-85. I also brought the 70-300 but hardly used it.

If you are comfortable lugging the DSLR, I wouldn’t be concerned about the reach.

Also, a little expensive, but you can get a tour being towed behind a bicycle (it’s not as crude as that, but look it up), with plenty of time at the key monuments. Your own tour guide for a few hours without the trouble of others.

Just don’t ask to visit the Winifred Beecher Howe memorial.
