Now it's my turn.
Will be going to DC towards the end of April. Will be flying and to get around the city, will be taking the subway, or whatever it's called, and Uber/Lyft.
I have 2 choices - my Nikon D5300 w/Sigma 17-70mm Contemporary or my wife's Nikon Coolpix S9900. I'm leaning towards the S9900 only because of it's size. It's a great piece of equipment.
Thoughts?
Thanks
Jay

Take the wife and have her bring her camera along and you bring yours. ;)
I was there last May and the humidity was outrageous. Most of my keepers were from my cellphone. The lens kept fogging up on my camera. Take your time and enjoy.
Suggestion: International Spy Museum!

Why have the D5300 if you don't use it.
I find these questions humorous due to why have a camera if you don't want to take and use it.
I can see if you were skydiving or rappelling off a cliff.
But walking around DC?
go with your first choice, the coolpix.

My wife use to challenge my need to take as much equipment as possible on some of our longer trips. My reply was that I did not acquire all of these tools to not enjoy them for their original intent. I love the wildlife aspects of the hobby and thought it appropriate that I use them for Yellowstone opportunities. Duh!
Skip Uber/lyft. DC has great tour buses that stop at every spot, just about and with the right pass you can get on and off. When I was there, you could buy a pass that worked on all 4 routes. Then, if you want to go somewhere the bus doesn't stop, think about Uber or Lyft.

The temp of your lens/camera was way below the air temp. I suspect it was in a hotel/motel or similar air conditioned environment. When I expect I will be taking my camera out of an air conditioned environment, I always allow the camera/lens to acclimate to outside air before using.

Jay - Back to basics--what do you expect to do with your pictures? The answer may make your decision easier. In general I'm in agreement with the rest of the people saying lighter is better and take the S9900 for the same reasons they cite. However, if you want particular types of pictures that may be better handled by the DSLR maybe you should consider that. For me, cities are interesting but I'm not as interested in getting shots more technical than what the S9900 can produce so if I had that camera I'd probably take it to D.C. -- but I'm not you even though we share a name. Enjoy--it's a fabulous city.

Good choice. You will be less conspicuous and it will be more convenient to carry.

Yeah, nobody will know you're a tourist.

Take the camera you are most familiar with that gives you the best results in everyday shooting.

Do you like shooting with the Coolpix? I hate the feel of those little cameras after my DSLR. Take what you like shooting with.

Take both, that way the two of you can shoot and have fun at the same time!
