My file structure (by year, day, month, description) under F:\LR4 Main Library">Photos (the root folder so to speak) I 'm showing folders 2008,2009,2010,2011,2012,2013 with daily sub-folders within each year.
I just noticed that my 2013 folder is slit up as far as how it's displaying in LR, one under the F:\LR4 Main Library">Photos>2013 and then there is another folder "2013" listed above the aforementioned, not all...the rest are appearing where they should be...under the main directory...yet if I look at the path of the ones above ...location is correct and all files are where they should be...it's the way they are now displaying...A couple days ago it was one continuous list, when I first noticed it I thought I lost about 15 days of shooting...it's all there...if I go into explorer (PC) it is in correct order and everything is where it should be...no lost files or folders showing...could this be a way of LR showing most or recently visited folders...and is there a way to change it to the way it was....one continuous list, not two lists of the same directory...no they are not duplicates.
Thanks for any suggestions. I would include a screen shot but I'm out of my office...

It looks like one way or another the LR database got confused and needs to be re shown the correct location.

Assuming you are not trying to save the work that you have done on the files in LR I would try removing them from the catalog (without deleting the the files) and and re-import them using Add.

Or

If you want to try and save your work change the folder names outside of LR (ex 2013 to 2013x) so LR can't find the files then inside LR Right Click the folder and select the option to find the folder location and browse to the renamed folder. If this puts the folder back where it belongs in LR you can then rename the folder inside LR brows to the original folder name.

1st and foremost, thank you... absolutely I'm trying to save my work...(LRCAT) and your suggestion would certainly work (and a good idea at that) however...it doesn't tell me why it happened and how to avoid it in the future. I imported a couple test folders today and they too are going into that upper group...so either something changed over the past couple days (that is not evident to me) or something is going on within LR4 (a bug perhaps), I have been importing the same way I've always done since LR was first introduced. I'll be calling Adobe tomorrow and get their feed back, I need to explore all options before I start playing/moving tens of thousands of photos.
Thanks again,
Doug

Yes, Rpavich is correct, a screen shot would help.

One thing that often confuses folks is when they shoot BOTH RAW and jpeg files and tries to import everything in a directory. Lightroom defaults to placing the RAW files in the Library and then stores the in-camera jpegs in a separate subordinate folder that is not cataloged in LR.

While this seems like what you are describing, the sudden
overnight" appearance of this seems odd unless you changed a setting.

Post a screen shot and hopefully someone will recognize what happened.

I don't shoot JPEG, only RAW...and If on occasion I shoot JPEG...they are moved to a different drive altogether. (Excuse my truncating/obscuring of file/client names)... I hope this helps...as you can see, it appears as if there are two separate 2013 folders...wasn't like that a couple days ago...

Are you sure you are looking at the right drive letter? Looks like you are looking at the backup drive letter Mybook F; maybe you were thinking you are looking at the internal drive?

I do not keep my photos on my system "C" drive, a Raid 0+1 used exclusively for programs and system files ONLY... My "E" drive is for my drawings/artwork... my "F:" drive is for my Photos & Light Room Catalog only, it is the correct targeted drive....my "G" Drive is for my JPGs,TIFFs, DOCs, etc.etc. files...They are all external drives and backed up on other external drives, why?...systems crash, E,F,&G are then backed up on two other drives(external) and all files burned to disk for off site storage.

Sounds like a good system.

Yeah, I learned some 15-20 years ago, back up, back up & back up, then do it again...(back in the Tape back-up days) I started with 3 sets of tapes, a daily incremental set,a weekly full backup set, and a weekly off site set, then that whole set would be replaced the following week with another 3 sets of tapes, and again for the 3rd week, then the 1st set would be brought back in and it would start all over again for the next 3 weeks, and so on... this was done for 3 work stations in the CADD room I managed, not to mention the companies main frame...that was a whole "nutter" nightmare. Knock on wood, to date I have never lost a byte...

Irwin was a big name in tape backup in the old days. When I'd go to the computer show in NYC, the Irwin rep was always doing tricks - magic. I never had a need for his tape system, though.

I was going to suggest you contact Adobe. If I didn't know better I would think that there were two 2013 folders one in the root and one in the library. I understand why you wouldn't want to start moving around files without understanding the cause. It will be interesting to hear what Adobe has to say.

Contacting them (Adobe) today, maybe they can do a remote look see...I did a System search for "2013" folder, one came up on the F drive...

Jerry, we used 3M 120 MB tapes LOL...can you imagine how many tapes we would go through today...Don't remember the drive manufacturer...still have a computer in the attic with a tape drive and an Iomeaga disk drive in it.
