Fixing is easy, just drag the folders (within Lightroom) to the appropriate place.

To find out what is going on may be more complicated. Snap a few shots and import them just as you would normally, if they go to the wrong place then study the "Destination" section in the Import Module. Also check the "Copy to" dialogue.

Bring sup a question I had. If I move folders around within LR4 it will keep track, correct. The only time I lose files is if I m,ove them in Finder, Correct??

That's correct.

As Searcher said - look at your settings in the Import window and destination information. The only time I ever had a problem is when I changed a setting and forgot to set it back.

If moving files in LR doesn't help, and you can't duplicate the problem you can always remove that year from the LR catalog. Before doing that make sure they are backed up elsewhere. Then select the year and folders in LR, R click and choose delete (bottom of drop down menu). It will ask if you want to delete (sending the photos to the computer's trash), or remove. Click on remove. That only deletes them from the LR catalog and not the computer. Make sure the photos are where you want them in Finder. Then re-import into LR.

Nothing has been changed, the way I import is the same as I've always done...I wish it was something I did...

Thanks Sue, there are no files TO move...they are where they should be...as told by viewing the path to each folder/sub-folder, whether I check within LR or use Explorer... the paths to each folder/file are identical...same catalog same everything. Moving is not an option...as I've tried thinking that was the issue, only to get a warning "Folders/Files already exist" They are backed up in 3 locations and burned to disk so that's not an issue...I don't want to go that route either and would be my last ditch effort, at least not before all else fails. or I just live with it, personally I think it's just a display glitch...I have a few other feelers out and waiting on a response. I do appreciate all the responses from all thus far. We'll see...hopefully :?

I have had that same thing happen to me and it was a glitch in my import. I also could not move the files LR said files exist so for those few files I live with it and don't worry about it

I put 62 files in a folder using Windows Explorer and used Import in Lightroom 4. The resulting folder in the LR4 catalog only brought in 12 of the files. The other 50 just didn't show up and were completely ignored. They're still on my hard drive at the original location but not in LR4 catalog version of the folder. So after trying to figure that out for 15 minutes to see if I did something wrong (I'm new to LR), I went back to Windows Explorer and copied the same 62 files into another folder with a different name and imported it to LR4. That time all 62 files were imported without problem just as I would expect.

I think the Library module of LR4 is not perfect and has a glitch or two. When you do the exact same thing twice and the first one doesn't work but the second one does, that's not right.

I'm also wondering if it may be a default within the software, keep the most current accessed/imported files up top...I'll watch as more are added and see if any are displayed down in the other group...as far as my method of importing, (may not be the best way) but to the best of my knowledge... nothing has changed...I just checked my other computer where I have LR 4 also installed (although I don't use that computer for LR) the setting are identical to the one I use...which again more or less assures me nothing has been changed after comparing every pull down and preferences. I can only hope if it ends up being something I did, the fix will be easy and straight forward. Once again, thank you all for the help and suggestions, If I figure it out, I will post the solution...
Doug

My file structure (by year, day, month, description) under F:\LR4 Main Library">Photos (the root folder so to speak) I 'm showing folders 2008,2009,2010,2011,2012,2013 with daily sub-folders within each year.
I just noticed that my 2013 folder is slit up as far as how it's displaying in LR, one under the F:\LR4 Main Library">Photos>2013 and then there is another folder "2013" listed above the aforementioned, not all...the rest are appearing where they should be...under the main directory...yet if I look at the path of the ones above ...location is correct and all files are where they should be...it's the way they are now displaying...A couple days ago it was one continuous list, when I first noticed it I thought I lost about 15 days of shooting...it's all there...if I go into explorer (PC) it is in correct order and everything is where it should be...no lost files or folders showing...could this be a way of LR showing most or recently visited folders...and is there a way to change it to the way it was....one continuous list, not two lists of the same directory...no they are not duplicates.
Thanks for any suggestions. I would include a screen shot but I'm out of my office...

It looks like one way or another the LR database got confused and needs to be re shown the correct location.

Assuming you are not trying to save the work that you have done on the files in LR I would try removing them from the catalog (without deleting the the files) and and re-import them using Add.

Or

If you want to try and save your work change the folder names outside of LR (ex 2013 to 2013x) so LR can't find the files then inside LR Right Click the folder and select the option to find the folder location and browse to the renamed folder. If this puts the folder back where it belongs in LR you can then rename the folder inside LR brows to the original folder name.

Yes, Rpavich is correct, a screen shot would help.

One thing that often confuses folks is when they shoot BOTH RAW and jpeg files and tries to import everything in a directory. Lightroom defaults to placing the RAW files in the Library and then stores the in-camera jpegs in a separate subordinate folder that is not cataloged in LR.

While this seems like what you are describing, the sudden
overnight" appearance of this seems odd unless you changed a setting.

Post a screen shot and hopefully someone will recognize what happened.

I don't shoot JPEG, only RAW...and If on occasion I shoot JPEG...they are moved to a different drive altogether. (Excuse my truncating/obscuring of file/client names)... I hope this helps...as you can see, it appears as if there are two separate 2013 folders...wasn't like that a couple days ago...

Are you sure you are looking at the right drive letter? Looks like you are looking at the backup drive letter Mybook F; maybe you were thinking you are looking at the internal drive?

I do not keep my photos on my system "C" drive, a Raid 0+1 used exclusively for programs and system files ONLY... My "E" drive is for my drawings/artwork... my "F:" drive is for my Photos & Light Room Catalog only, it is the correct targeted drive....my "G" Drive is for my JPGs,TIFFs, DOCs, etc.etc. files...They are all external drives and backed up on other external drives, why?...systems crash, E,F,&G are then backed up on two other drives(external) and all files burned to disk for off site storage.
