I just got my computer back from repair at Staples. It had the Java virus. They told me don't touch those free ones under any circumstances. They just can't keep up with the hackers dirty little minds fast enough. They suggested Norton as the best so that's what we did. It checks repeatedly all day long. So far so good!

Of course they don't don't like the free ones at Staples because they don't sell them. Just watch where you surf and what you click and you won't have problems.

There are 82 Million routers that are open to any hackers, your firewall is now going to do nothing with the new UPnP problems.( Maybe.)Yes any hacker can take over your machines and McAfee or others will not help.
Everyone go to. Www.grc.com and you can learn some more there. Acutely you will learn to much......

does anyone have any experiance with windows Security Essential.??

I use MSE on my laptop, but then I rarely use it outside the house (I'm behind a wireless router). My brother used to use Norton, but after paying a hefty sum to have a virus removed, he abandoned it (not sure what he's using now). I use avast! free AV (updates automatically), SuperAntiSpyware (paid version that scans hard drives once weekly), and occasionally run a scan with the free version of Malwarebytes. No issues anywhere. If you're not behind a firewall, hardware or software, you're taking a big risk.

Years ago, when I wanted to remove Norton, I printed out four, count 'em 4, pages of instructions for complete removal. I wouldn't recommend that package to anybody.

Great site! Be sure to run the UnPnP software, and check your machine with their "Shields Up!" scanner.

Don, I have had good luck with Security Essential but in addition to using it, I very much appreciate a great bit of software called "Advanced Security Care". It's great in 'cleaning-up' things that most other programs miss. It's great with keeping the Registry in order and my computers, both run much faster and more efficient with it. I think it's well worth the minimal annual cost. I've used it now for going on four years.

Correction: I must had had 'security' on the brain. Sorry... the correct name is "Advanced SYSTEM Care", called 'ASC'.

I have used Norton and McAfee off and on for many years and could not stand either one of them as they take over your computer with all the extra junk they put in them, even if you do not install all the options they just take over. I highly recomend Microsoft Security Essentials and if you want add Malwarebytes Anti-Malware they both work great no problems at all and computer still runs as it should.

I haven't used Norton in years, although some friends use it and like it. I've heard about it taking up too much of the system's resources and being hard to remove completely. Apparently, you can't have two antivirus programs on your computer, which is too bad, because no program is perfect, so having two might catch more problems.

I started using Avira's free program and then got the paid Premium version. The important thing is to keep whatever program you have up to date. Look for reviews on antivirus programs before you settle on one.

Have been using 360 for some years - somehow McAfee got installed by something - now both run and report. Speed? - have no way that I can judge - whatever its doing is acceptable.

Yup. Works great, properly configured and updated. MS kinda got it right with this one. IMHO, any company that sponsors any product that installs when you try to install something completely different, and you have to go through all sorts of gyrations to prevent it, is a purveyor of malware. Sorry Symantec.

I'd have to disagree with that. I had MS Essentials on my 1 yr. old machine when I got the Java virus. They are just getting entirely too sophisticated now.

I completely agree with you that the crackers are getting vastly more sophisticated. My point is that Security Essentials does the job well, is unobtrusive (doesn't interrupt your workflow several times a day/week etc.) and free. NO antimalware system will prevent ALL malware infections. MS has gotten better about responding to new varieties and providing tools and understandable instructions for removal.

PS I'm no MS fanboy by any stretch.

I believe the statement made above was that NORTON slowed-down the PC, not Windows. You're right; Windows does not slow it down, but in fact, Windows 7 is actually faster than previous versions in my experience.
