MS Security Essentials is all that my son uses and he's been very happy with it. He is very active with downloading so apparently it's worked for him.
After my McAfee subscription expired I signed up for BitDefender Total Security. It seems to run a scan much faster than McAfee, for one thing.
Most Norton products so slow down, put "stuff" in every corner of your hard drive, If you are using a Windows OS, Microsoft Security Essentials is a good free security software. I have used AVG free version. I currently use webroot security software, at
www.webroot.com. I also reccomend Malware bytes to remove some of the latest malware, hostage wear for Windows OS. It is essential that if you use a Windows systems that you get the updates from Microsoft, their routine and critical updates are generally released on Tuesday of each week. It is also necessary that no matter which security software you decide to use and install that you check for updates as often as you can to make sure you are not a victim.

Works well. Another one you may want to try is peerblock. It's amazing what is out there trying to get in. So far it is on the lookout for more than 1,000,000,000 sites on my computer. As far away as China and all the way from ad sites to schools.
