It was less than 24 hours ago that some US contributor made a wise crack about how sad it was that us Brits were not allowed to have guns.
Does he still feel that way after the horrific events in Connecticut and half a dozen other schools in the US?

MY sympathy is with the parents of the children, the police who had to go in and SEE DEAD 5 year olds with gunshot wounds and the teachers and families who will never have a Christmas again.

I fear you're farting against thunder. The Constitutional 'Right to bear arms' was brought about by a situation that no longer exists, and hasn't for 200 years or so, but it's a right that Mr & Mrs America will fight to retain until their dying breath, despite the fact it could be responsible for bring that day closer still.
You have to understand how powerful the NRA and the gun lobby is in the States. There are an estimated 300 Million guns in America, for a population of around 200 Million. That's 1½ guns for every living, breathing person in the USA. That's more guns than any army in the World, and you're not going to get rid of them overnight.
So, let's be realistic and let them keep their shotguns, and rifles, and hand-guns (although why they want to defeats me). To make a huge difference all America has to do is outlaw automatic assault weapons. Who but a complete nut-case needs anything like an AK-47 or whatever the US equivalent of that is?

Rights are for US to protect US.
This disturbed pshcho was not acting with in the law, he was a psychotic man on a mission of destruction.
Would it make people like youi feel better if he used pipe bombs ? Shrapnel grenades? Toxic gas bombs?
All of which can me made for 20 bucks in the garage with chemicals under your sink?

Timothy McVey and the Federal Building in Oklahoma immediately leaps to mind. Suicide bombers all over the world all causing mass destruction and mass murder and not a gun in sight. Evil people do evil things, this is really not a gun control issue although I knew it would turn into that. Its sad that so many would take such a tragic event and turn it into a political football.

Then I am pathetic. You have no right to tell us our business. What has happen is terrible. It should not have happen but there are sick people in this world who will kill another person by any means. The US is not alone. Other countries have problems with sick, crazy people amongst them hell bent on killing. The real problem is not with guns but people. Look at the real problem.

Some own them for hunting, some protection, some sport, lots of gun sports from pins to 1000 yard tatgets to combat shooting, plain target shooting, silhouette shooting, skeet, trap. Some own guns for subsistance.
Though I npo longer hunt, I still like to shoot skeet and trap, punch holes in paper, reload, and silhouette shoot.
