If you live in an area where you have power outages from winter storms you may want a manual chair. We lost power and my chair was stuck in recline with me in it. I have weak legs. Scooted out to the end of the chair. The chair tilted down and I slid off. Crawled over to the couch and struggled to get up. Once power came back on, I reclined my chair and started looking for a manual chair.
I have my chair plugged into the UPS for the iMac. I've never used it that way, and I don't know if the UPS could handle the current draw.

I think it can. I think even the smallest of them can handle like 1000W. Just not long but you won't need more than 1 minute to get off the chair.

It can't hand a laser printer, though. I have to plug that into its own outlet.
Beware of doing biz with LaZboy

Funny you should say that. I had a bad experience with a LazBoy store. Misleading information and difficulty in contacting the store.
Recliners are fine for relaxing or sometimes sleeping semi upright because of surgery or airway issues, but I am not a fan of lift chairs. As a physical therapist, I see too many people get lift chairs because it is becoming harder to come to stand from sitting. If you are completely unable to stand on your own without a boost, then lift chairs may be a viable choice of preserving independence. However, if you are starting to have difficulty with coming to stand, the struggle becomes important. The use it or lose it philosophy is real here. The effort required to stand is critical to maintaining the ability to stand. Once you relinquish the struggle, then you will get weaker that much more quickly. If you get to the point where you are unable to stand on your own, consider seeing a therapist first, if you are still debilitated enough then you can consider a lift chair assuming you are still able to ambulate and are interested in continuing to do so. Recliners fine, Lift chairs be very wary.

We're in the market for lift chairs/recliners. A most frustrating experience. Trying out a chair in a furniture showroom is the way to go but availability is limited, especially of chairs for tall people. There is a much larger selection online but how do you know the chair is a good fit and that the material and color are to your liking?
Another problem is the difficulty of getting solid information. A company like MCombo is registered in the U.S., but is it owned by the Chinese? Red Barrel Studio has a nice looking chair but I can't find anything on the company or where the chairs are made.
We've gone to stores like LazBoy, Rooms-to-Go and Ashley. And I've spent hours poring over the offerings of online sellers like Amazon and Wayfair.
Any of you have experience with and advice buying recliners, especially online?

I bought mine at Sofas Unlimited. I tried to go to stores with very large selections. I was fortunate enough to find a style that was comfortable and then ordered one like it in the fabric and color liked. I would never order one on line without being able to try it. More than likely it would not be comfortable. I am very picky.
I have one hat was given to me by his family when my next door neighbor passed away. I never use the lift part and keep it unplugged unless someone comes to visit that needs that. I don't want to get used to that unless I have to someday.

Had to replace my old recliner about a year or so ago. Went to Ashley. Found one. Said I would think overnight about material and come back the next day. They said price would be higher. Nope. Went around the corner to Rooms-To-Go. Found what I wanted got a better price and less than half the delivery charge, plus faster delivery and setup. Just my two cents worth.

They are very slow. I was thinking about how to speed it up =- different motor or different gearing.

Jerry, I'm getting worried about you talking about doing something to speed up the power lift part of your chair. I see images of jet pilot ejection seats....
Recently I went to a scooter store for a new battery. They had all sorts of devices for the handicapped including lift chairs.

Find a retailer for Golden brand lift chairs. They are manufactured i Pennsylvania and have retailers all over the USA. They are fairly expensive. They have chairs sized to a person's body size. They are usually sold in stores that specialize in motorized wheelchairs and aids for the elderly and handicapped. At least you should look at them before making a final decision.
