We're in the market for lift chairs/recliners. A most frustrating experience. Trying out a chair in a furniture showroom is the way to go but availability is limited, especially of chairs for tall people. There is a much larger selection online but how do you know the chair is a good fit and that the material and color are to your liking?

Another problem is the difficulty of getting solid information. A company like MCombo is registered in the U.S., but is it owned by the Chinese? Red Barrel Studio has a nice looking chair but I can't find anything on the company or where the chairs are made.

We've gone to stores like LazBoy, Rooms-to-Go and Ashley. And I've spent hours poring over the offerings of online sellers like Amazon and Wayfair.

Any of you have experience with and advice buying recliners, especially online?

I recently bought a nice-looking lift chair from CDCASA on Amazon. It came in two boxes. The price was excellent, and the chair performs as advertised. My only complaint was the poor engineering design. The seatback was unstable because it was a slide-on attachment and did not have a means of locking it into position. So, it slipped out of the tracks sometimes. I fixed it by drilling two holes on each side and bolting it int rigid position. Works fine now.

Advice for buying a recliner on line without trying it out - D O N ' T !!
Double trouble if you are tall and want good support. I am average height and searched many local furniture stores before finding a chair that supported my legs comfortably at an equal height to the upper body. It was part of a living room set, that was a little different than the average dimensions.
I only found one custom designed chair in all of the recliner displays that was comfortable and well made, and it was manual, narrow, and expensive. I could never tell how the chair would lay out unless I had tested the design before.
After two years I wore out, coughed up some real money, and bought the recliner from the set: power motor, real leather, semi wide and plush, and enough length to support all but my heels. Ten years and still good to sleep in!
I did find some other chairs that were comfortable, bought two, but they did not last.

The problem with mine is it all in one piece. Does not come apart to fit through a doorway. Make sure it have a battery backup. Power goes out when your reclined and your stuck. I had to pin the remote to the arm as it could fall to the floor and I could not reach it to get back up. Good thing I had my phone in my pocket.

I have three of them (my wife's fault ). Only one is currently working. I had to replace parts in at least one under warranty. Right now, I use the one that is working. The other one is sitting in the living room, and I'll get to it - someday. The other one is sitting outside in the screen room, and I think that needs a part. In case you didn't guess, all the parts are expensive.

Looking back, I see that we returned two Catnappers, in 2009 and 2011. The one I'm using now is a Pride. My wife bought all of these online.

My little dachshund likes to sit on the chair with me, but I have to lower the footrest for him to get down. If I'm not quick enough to lower it, he'll turn and look at me. "Hey, I'm waiting here!"

If you live in an area where you have power outages from winter storms you may want a manual chair. We lost power and my chair was stuck in recline with me in it. I have weak legs. Scooted out to the end of the chair. The chair tilted down and I slid off. Crawled over to the couch and struggled to get up. Once power came back on, I reclined my chair and started looking for a manual chair.

I have a heavy power chair. I was able to roll over the side when the power went out, without the chair threatening to tip. I gathered the pillow and blanket that cushioned my exist, and moved to the back room where the decrepit cheaper double recliner cradled me (and dog) the rest of the night. As in photography, a back up is always good.

This is a brookstone chair we bought a few years ago at a furniture store and absolutely love it.

I have been shopping for a lift chair the last few months. Every one I seen had a battery backup to prevent you getting stuck if the power goes out.

Thank you all for replying. Interesting comments and experiences. So I'm not the only one having trouble with these chairs.

Jerry, good you got a couple of chairs to fix - we wouldn't want you to get bored!

The best recliner we've ever had (and by a large margin) is a Catnapper. It is large and very well-padded. I don't know if they make a lift chair but if they do, be sure and try one of those.

I went through this about several years ago. The chair pictured here is absolutely the answer you are looking for. After several surgeries this chair made my recovery much easier and I slept in it for months. It is expensive, but worth every penny!

https://www.apexpharm.com/lift-chairs

Apex Pharmacy is near me in Connecticut, but they have an amazing setup for pretty much everything you might want from a pharmacy, including a lift chair section. Take a look, make a call. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful.
