There is plenty to do in NYC for a week but consider these things: Take a subway over to Brooklyn and get off the first stop in Brooklyn. Walk up some stairs to get onto the Brooklyn Bridge and walk back into the city. Another thing you may want to consider is a trip over to Liberty Island in NJ. The museum there shows the history of immigration through that port. From there you can take a ferry over to the Statue of Liberty which makes for an excellent visit. If you want some killer photos of NYC at night, go to Hoboken, NJ (you can take a PATH train) from the Port Authority and there is a riverfront park where you can get great shots of the city at night. If you are driving, you may also go to Weehawken which is near Hoboken but up on the bluffs. They also have some great views of the city. Get there about sunset and see the entire downtown turn golden with all the glass buildings reflecting the setting sun. Have a great trip and post some shots when you return. If you would like some other suggestions, PM me. Before covid I would go into the city several times a year just for photography.

My wife and I wanted to go Dec. 2019 but then Covid hit. So we don't do any trip since then. In fact Hershel of B&H said will give us the tour of the store.

A seven day stay would cost us about about $4,000 with taxes.for $2,800 we traveled to Hawaii and that included the plane, to and from the sirport, the flowers, and the hotel.i don't know if we will ever travel to NYC around our anniversary.

Find an air b&b or a nice motel/hotel in NJ about 30 miles out from the city after the summer peak season -- late September would be good. Ride the train into the Port Authority terminal each day and save a lot of money. From the Port Authority, you can find transportation on subways, trains, Ubers, buses, and taxis. People say NYC is expensive but that is only if you want to dine in their 5-star restaurants and stay at fine hotels. I go into the city from Bethlehem, PA (about 2 hours on a bus), eat in the city, and enjoy world-class museums, free exhibits, and interesting neighborhoods like Chinatown and spend less than 100.00 including the round-trip bus fare. Their public transportation system is so good, you wouldn't want to drive anyway. I know you could take a trip to the city and spend 2000.00 for a week or even less. There are trains into the city from numerous places in NJ and the ride-in would be much quicker than when I take the bus. No one says to visit NYC you have to stay in NYC.
I have included a shot of the hole the buildings collapsed into on 9/11. When I took this shot they were in the process of rebuilding a retaining wall that kept the Hudson River from flowing into the site. The wall was damaged in the collapse. It looks much different today and the memorial and Oculus Mall across the street are
well worth a trip to NYC. I hope you make it. Also, the other shot shows the beams of light the city throws up each 9/11 representing the two towers. It is best viewed from Jersey City, NJ, which is just across the Hudson River from the city.

I guess it would be a bad idea to have a car there as there is no place to park am I right?

Parking is a major problem in most large metro areas. I knew someone who had a condo near Central Park, nice view of the river and the Statue of Liberty. His parking space in the building cost him $1500 a month, and that was 30 years ago.

It is not the parking, it's dealing with tight narrow streets, dodging taxis and bicycle couriers, discourteous drivers, and bumper-to-bumper traffic. The streets from north to south are plenty wide but the cross-streets are like running an obstacle course! Parking can be had but can be expensive. When I used to drive into the city I felt like a ball in a pinball machine!

Thank you and and thank you all that have replied. I think the Fall would be as I don't think I want to deal with winter in NY. What do you mean by the law not enforced which mean I would have more freedom to do things or you think there may be more crime?

My family and I frequently drive to NYC for day trips to museums and the like. Using sensible precautions that you would use anywhere (don't flash wads of money, e.g.), I never worry about crime. My two daughters drove down on Saturday to do various things all over the city and neither my wife nor I had any concerns.

Forget the hype. There are friendly, helpful, people everywhere. And they are much less likely to be carrying a gun. Have fun, it's a great place!

I agree--stay in NJ. I like having my car to get around, but parking is not cheap. Go on line beforehand and you will find plenty of garages with coupons offering great deals.

I was in Parsippany-Troy Hills, NJ 20 years ago for a week seminar. I was tempted but didn't dare to drive into NY city.

The best time to visit NYC was the last half of the 1990’s when Rudy Giuliani had cleaned things up.

Not sure how much time Frank T spends in NY but he's apparently ingested some of mayor Adam's Kool Aid. I spent 40 years there and believe me most of what you hear is true. In addition to the traditional muggings/shootings you now have a chance of simply being smashed in the face for no apparent reason while doing your "touristy" things.
And the sad part is there are no longer "high crime areas". People get shot/accosted on every corner of the city.
Oh, and don't forget the newest thing- getting pushed off the subway tracks while waiting for a train. Now I'm not saying everyone who visits the city has a problem. But it certainly is crime ridden with the authorities doing less and less each day to improve the situation

No, the facts support my conclusion.
When you look at crime figures, you need to look at the per-capita figures, not the whole figure.
Example.
NYC is one of the greatest cities in the world, but if you prefer, you can always visit other places, but there is nothing in this country that compares to NYC.

New York City is safe. New York City is the United States' most populated city with 8.42 million people, and it's the safest big city according to the FBI.
Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection ranks New York City as the 9th safest city worldwide just after Paris.

Some of you have never been further than the local Dunkin Donuts and think that Applebees is fine dining. To those people, I suggest you visit Jacksonville Fl.

Additionally, the photographer in you will find this to be an amazing opportunity. Whether, it's The Top of The Rock, The Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty and the Wall Street Bull, you will be amazed by what this great location has to offer.

As I read all the comments written by people who've never been here, never experienced the energy or the friendliness of the people, all I can say is that I feel sorry for them.
Let those people hide in the woods in Colorado or the swamps of Florida and leave NYC for those of you that want a once in a lifetime experience.

Come to New York. You will not regret it.
