This was spun out of control with the Louis Rossman video. You can still use 3rd party batteries, provided they are on the "compatible" list and have the safety features (over temp sensor and cutoff). Same goes for the memory cards. Avoid cheaping out on these two items. You want quality cards that are fast enough to keep up with the camera! All cards will get hot anyway, if shooting extensively.

Hi all!

I ordered some new Kaster brand batteries from eBay and got the same screen message on my Nikon Z5 that I purchased in January. Kaster, Power 2000 and Vivitar brand batteries work without a problem with my Nikon D810s, D800s and D750s! No problems with my older EN-EL15 batteries in the Z5.

Be well! Ed

Trade the camera in for a Canon from Abes

We have plain dictatorship by the big companies. The same with the ink of the printers. Not to mention that their ink cartridges get emptied with mimimum printing and their price is skyrocketing. Shame!

Use precision Colors for your ink for Canon and Epson printers. They actually sell a device to reset the chips in Canon printers. Great company and great products. Been using them for 5 years now. Never sn issue and they even have ICC profiles for their inks and certain papers.

I bought an "eco tank" Epson printer. The ink lasts forever and is really inexpensive.

Personally, if I am spending $2,000, $3,000 or $4,000 on a camera, I don't mind spending an extra $50 for a OEM battery. Also, if I spent $4,000 on a camera, my wife would probably divorce me, so batteries would be the least of my problems.

I'm on my 5th ET8550 printer due to them failing in less than 7 months.
Terrible experience.

The original post on the matter of Nikon limiting the use of 3rd party batteries has gone on for 11 pages and has drifted way off topic.

NikonRumors today has an article on the issue which contains new info. The following is an image reportedly from a Z8 with a 3rd party battery installed:

The article also states that the last firmware update for the following cameras
will result in the same message being displayed if 3rd party batteries are used: D3100, D3200, D5100, D5200 and P7700.

Makes total sense as you can charge the battery in the camera. Some crap battery can easily overheat and damage the camera. If one cannot afford suitable batteries, one should probably take up crochet or buy a cheaper camera and some suitable batteries

This is a NON issue for me: I only use O.E.M batteries!! I'm still using the originals that came with my D800 and D810 plus the extras I bought with the cameras, The Watsons that came as a come-on with the cameras have died long ago.

Yes. It is very tiring. Fatiguing, even. But I think the Russian owners of the site enjoy watching us fight and beat on each other. I am really close to taking a long sabbatical.

Russians? I thought this was an Aussie site!

While waiting on Z9 Nikon batteries, bought Kaster, got 2+ charger for ~$50 & we all know what the Nikon batteries cost. I find off brand do not give as many images , per charge as OEM. Wonder if nikon is putting in the " Not up to spec" in their firmware updates for Z9 ?

Unless they are the EN-EL15c, they will not work.

I did the same, I went Epson "Eco Tank" and no more ink cartridges for me.

I once had an Epson tech admit to me that the ink in printer ink cartridges was the most-expensive liquid-per-ounce of any liquid sold in the world to consumers.

And of course the cartridges are made to tell the printer they are out of ink before they are, and stop the printers from letting you print with the ink left in the cartridges, so you replace them sooner.

I got off the ridiculous cartridge treadmill.

Of course a set of bottles of all the archival inks for my Canon 24 in. wide archival printer goes for $700 a set from Canon, but you can get them for far less from other makers. They can produce prints that wont fade for about 150-200 years, long after we are all gone, LOL.

Cheers and best to you.

When will people understand Canon,Nikon do not make batteries. All those batteries come from an outside mfg. that will make the batteries to the OEM spec. It doesn't take long for the chipped batteries or even chipped ink cartridges to become available. It ain't no biggie. Funny I have never actually seen a camera destroyed by a reputable aftermarket camera battery. All I have ever heard of is the old statement" I know somebody ot I heard of it happening" Sort of like sasquatch

Do as I do, all camera cost between $450-$550 and lenses go from $150-$250 and stay out of the dog house. If my wife knew the true value I would be sleeping with my camera and lenses from now on!
