The original post on the matter of Nikon limiting the use of 3rd party batteries has gone on for 11 pages and has drifted way off topic.

NikonRumors today has an article on the issue which contains new info. The following is an image reportedly from a Z8 with a 3rd party battery installed:

The article also states that the last firmware update for the following cameras
will result in the same message being displayed if 3rd party batteries are used: D3100, D3200, D5100, D5200 and P7700.

That doesnt mean you cant use any 3rd party batteries. It just means you need the ones with the data communication chip. I have often encountered that with Wasabi batteries for my recent cameras. They sell some batteries with or without the chip, about a $15 difference. Clearly this is not Rocket Science.

Acoarst if you bought a few unchipped versions before updating your FW you have now learned to spend a bit extra even if youre not sure why at the time.

My nice used D3100 is being clawed back by Nikon!

Never suspected it would happen to such a legacy Camera!

We have plain dictatorship by the big companies. The same with the ink of the printers. Not to mention that their ink cartridges get emptied with mimimum printing and their price is skyrocketing. Shame!

Clawed back? What does that mean?

People are bad mouthing Nikon, I shoot Canon, about non OEM batteries but if someone using non OEM batteries and the camera not shooting up to its design potential they are blaming nikon, ruining their reputation, and not their battery that they saved a few dollars on.
$4000 for the latest and greatest camera and saving some lunch money on a battery?
I would worry about any warranty issues with a non OEM battery and delicate electronics

Yes. It is very tiring. Fatiguing, even. But I think the Russian owners of the site enjoy watching us fight and beat on each other. I am really close to taking a long sabbatical.

If it is so fatiguing, take a break, sign off, don't reply to things unless your replies are helpful to others.

Not to mention a camera catching fire and burning down the house, or exploding in your face. Not worth a 25 cent thermistor.

Hi all!

I ordered some new Kaster brand batteries from eBay and got the same screen message on my Nikon Z5 that I purchased in January. Kaster, Power 2000 and Vivitar brand batteries work without a problem with my Nikon D810s, D800s and D750s! No problems with my older EN-EL15 batteries in the Z5.

Be well! Ed
