OK...so which one are you! A "real" photographer? Or a "label worshiper/poser"? And how can you tell?! I own the 70~200mm. And the 200~500mm. And the 24~70mm. And a few other very nice Nikon lenses and bodies. I sure would like to know which category I fit into! You know...just so I can sleep at night!!

You're a funny guy. I would like to think that I am a real photographer but the realistic version is that it's a work in progress.

There is no shortage of arrogance on the Hog but you won't get it from me.

I hear you mike... I have discovered that upgrading glass is sometimes a lot more productive than up grading bodies as long as you don't really need the advanced features of the latest and greatest. If you are a pro, thats a diff story...

If you plan right (I thought I did) your income should stay at least the same (mine did). But in the last 4 years I've lost close too 30% of my income. Now for me, I'm penny pitching. Not a fun place. Now when I get GAS I take anti acid and live with what I've got, and sometimes cry from the pains.

You'll get more satisfaction from continuing to produce better pics from the gear you know than those who suffer from the GAS mentality.

If you're happy then that is what matters - and I'll be happy for you. I'm sure that you're both real photographers.
For me GAS is synonymous with Label Worship and Posing, and encouraged by manufacturers.
Acquiring gear simply to own it makes collectors - not photographers. I do see the results in this forum, and I do look at the equipment used (PicInfo!). Often that info puts me off ever wishing for the expensive gear listed.

I don't know if this will satisfy this current fascination with they why of this purchase but after acquiring a 10-24mm for my D7100, I got a taste of what better glass is capable of.

The 18-55mm kit lens that came with it was okay and one of the best pictures that I ever made with it is still on the home page of our website but I was, and still am, after the IQ that comes with spending a little more.

As for the idea of label worshipping, that whole idea puzzles me. I am not stuck on the name, it just so happens that I have two Nikon bodies. Would it make sense to buy Olympus glass, no and I can't afford to start over with another brand or format so isn't that a rather moot question?

Hello, my name is Basil and I'm a Gas-o-holic! I just can't stop myself from wanting new lenses and fun accessories.

Congrats on the new lens - have fun with it until the G.A.S strikes again.

Hi Basil and thank you. I have to balance want of GAS with reality of need. I decided a year or so ago that there are certain lenses that I was before I retire. Nikon's "Holy Trinity" are among them and so far I have two out of three.

It's looking pretty good in my 'hood. Take care.

This was a combo that brought me into the Nikon camp 5 years ago after 35 years with Pentax. I bought it used from someone who probably switched to mirrorless. Great camera and an excellent lens! I enjoyed it for a year and a bit doing studio work and then sold it and switched to mirrorless Nikons myself.

My! That's a BIG one! To quote that Dirty Harry movie. NICE!!!! Just gotta LUV that fast f/2.8!!

I was after the faster zooms. My knees are crap from my last job and I don't want to deal with changing lenses all the time wile on the move so the compromise was the faster zooms.

To borrow a phrase from a very good friend, so far they have "failed to suck!" lol

I'm sure you are thinking correctly. This topic was not mine - i only responded to the title - which was about GAS, which is state of mind, and it would seem that I'm out of my depth. I also would like a top quality 10mm (M4/3) lens, but I make up for not having such - by taking pics when the atmosphere is clearest, getting exposure spot-on, using a tripod, and resorting to PP.
Good Luck, D.

I agree, it's not GAS, it is essential!! I'm really going to use this statement from now on.
Thanks for the solution!

Your other half may not see the logic or humor behind this idea though.

Thank you Don. I see that you have a D 7100 as well, when I get done running this lens through its paces on the D 750, I fully intend to mount it to the 7100 and see what kind of extra reach can be had from the crop sensor.

It is times like these that I am less than thrill by working 60 hour weeks and doing what I can to help my wife run our two home-based businesses.

Unfortunately, more hours in the day would probably just mean more work so I am not going to wish for that, lol

Oh it’s OK. You’ll enjoy it. I don’t own that one but its predecessor the 80-200 f2.8D push pull. It is decades olds now and it is very satisfying. I suspect you’re going to wind up quite satisfied with mine’s successor. Have fun.

You know, my "keeping up with the Jones's" idea only extends so far and I never have been opposed to anything because of its age.

In the last 15-ish years I have owned a D 5000, a D 7100, and a D 750. The first two were purchased as refurbs and the 750 was purchased (gently used) from a dear friend to fund the purchase of a Z7. All of these cameras are still alive and well although I gave the D 5000 to my oldest son some years ago.

Also, there is only one lens out of the six that I currently have that was purchased new. It was an 18-55mm VRII whose predecessor was destroyed when the D 7100 took a four foot fall in St. Thomas.

You can take the boy out of California but you can't take California out of the boy. I enjoy that fact that I can reduce, reuse, and recycle and only people that have more money than brains pay full retail just to say that they did. I have more toys to acquire. lol

Hobbies seldom make sense but they bring so much joy. My images from my iPhone or with a FF are worth every penny spent many times over.

Enjoy the hobby and your new lens!

Congrats on making me a bit jealous.

Thanks Joe, you are right of course and yes, I am not opposed to snatching the occasional phone pic. The best camera will ALWAYS be the one that you have in your hand.
