I'd say it's more the image than the gear. I could easily take a mediocre shot using a $10,000 rig. A pro could take an excellent shot with a ten-year-old basic rig. Start with a tripod, low ISO, sharp focus, and high enough shutter speed.

Read some comparisons to get an idea of which might work best. Nikon seems to be the winner.

You really have no clue on how to shoot wildlife.

HAHAHAHAHA! Obviously you know NOTHING about the D500 to make a statement like that! What a PUTZ!

While I completely agree on your opinion of him I think he was specifically talking about shooting video. Having shot video with a D500 I wouldn’t say it’s “worthless” but it’s less than ideal. I just don’t know why he even brought the D500 into the conversation to begin with, except to maybe dis it for the one thing it doesn’t do that well. The OP has a Z50 and a Z6II, both of which are better for video than the RX10MIV.

I would still take both because stuff can happen. I personally own the RX10iv and the Sony A1 with the 200-600mmG lens. I would definitely leave the 200-600mm at home. I don't even think that I would take my 70-200mm f2.8 because of the weight. Don't forget to enjoy your trip.

Another topic that I'm sure will generate much discussion, but here goes.....I'm going to Iceland in July and plan to take (along with my Z6ii) my Sony RX10 IV with a 600 zoom lens to photograph puffins. I have no idea how close we can get to them, but I know I'll need some kind of zoom lens. Here's my question: Between a Sony RX10 IV with a 1" sensor and 600mm of zoom and a Nikon DX Z50 with a 50-250mm lens (375mm equivalent reach), which combo do you think will provide the best image quality to crop? I'm torn. The Sony is a great camera with great reach, but a much smaller sensor. The Z50 has a shorter reach but larger sensor. Thoughts as to what would provide the best quality and ability to crop up tight?

I am going there to see if I can get some puffin pics. I am taking a Canon R7(33mpg) (crop 1:6) with a Canon 100-400 ll lens. I am also taking the Canon 600 prime f/11. Maybe we will get a sunny day. I have had good results with cropping the images with this camera. The Canon 100-400 ll is a superb lens. Monopod most of the time.

I have the SonyRX10iv too. On my last photo expedition in 2018 I took along the Sony and my Nikon D750. I shot 80% of the 2000 plus photos with the Sony on that trip and they looked just as good if not better than the full frame D750. I didn't use the clear zoom feature much but when I did it didn't degrade the images much in fact I couldn't pick them out later. It is by far my favorite and most versatile camera even though I also have 2 Nikon DSLRs and one Nikon Z5 . It has the sharpest lens of all of them. But take along several batteries not just 2.

lens sharpness is up there with the Canon 300 2.8 ! - which I have also used extensively ....
