Useable? How about exceptional or even marvelous.

Useable compared to D500 which is virtually worthless.

Totally agree with this recommendation above.
The Z50 is pretty low resolution and any cropping makes it worse.

What personal experience do you have to make the above statement?

Everybody here knows you would never shoot anything but Canon...so the answer to my question is NONE.

Both cameras have 20.1 mp sensors with the Sony being a much smaller so-called 1" sensor that is subject to increased noise in less than perfect lighting.

I too have no experience with either camera, but have serious doubts about your claims.

Where has anyone mentioned the D500?

Just you.

What personal experience do you have to challenge anything I ever say or post?
NONE, so just go away back to the attic where you belong.

At least I acknowledged in the post you quoted that I have no personal experience with either camera, but doubted your claims based on research I did on both.

As far as the Attic...that is also a place you make equally silly claims totally devoid of any evidence. Try backing up your claims with proof sometime.

I know several fellow pros that love to travel with their Sony RX10IV and get great shots at full 600mm and with the added Clear Image zoom , at 1200mm in jpeg .

If you dont underexpose, you can still get great image quality out of that camera and save the size and weight of traveling with bigger gear when you dont have to.

Some RX10IV photo galleries on Flickr:

Cheers and best to you on your trip.

Another topic that I'm sure will generate much discussion, but here goes.....I'm going to Iceland in July and plan to take (along with my Z6ii) my Sony RX10 IV with a 600 zoom lens to photograph puffins. I have no idea how close we can get to them, but I know I'll need some kind of zoom lens. Here's my question: Between a Sony RX10 IV with a 1" sensor and 600mm of zoom and a Nikon DX Z50 with a 50-250mm lens (375mm equivalent reach), which combo do you think will provide the best image quality to crop? I'm torn. The Sony is a great camera with great reach, but a much smaller sensor. The Z50 has a shorter reach but larger sensor. Thoughts as to what would provide the best quality and ability to crop up tight?

We went the end of June to the beginning of July, the Puffins were ending their breading season at that time. Depending on where you go you may be disappointed unless you have a specific guide, their are many guided tours that specialize in Puffins. When I went I took my Nikon D850 with the Nikon 500 5.6 lens. I thought that lens was ideal for them. They are shy and you should respect their space. We were at a island rookery and we were able to approach to about 30 yards. But there are many many other things to photograph in Iceland. You should take a lens that is versatile.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.

I was impressed that my neighbor's B700 could zoom the 35mm equivalent of 1444mm! I tried it out on some feeder sparrows, and, low and behold, got some very tight, sharp photos of those sparrows. The sensor was only 1:2/3rds and the actual focal length was in the 200's mm.

I'd say it's more the image than the gear. I could easily take a mediocre shot using a $10,000 rig. A pro could take an excellent shot with a ten-year-old basic rig. Start with a tripod, low ISO, sharp focus, and high enough shutter speed.

Read some comparisons to get an idea of which might work best. Nikon seems to be the winner.

It depends on what ISO you are shooting at,. At 100-200 the RX10 is very GOOD ! @ 400, so-so. above 400 and I would opt for APSC. You can use CIZ with the RX10, but you do loose some AF functionality - not very good for BIF's ! Up to 600mm the RX10 AF is very GOOD tho !

I’ve photographed puffins in Scotland. They are more land birds than air birds. Going out to sea to get fish to bring home. They nest underground so watch where you step.
I found they were probably about 100-200 feet from me.

Is that 50-250 weather sealed when on the Z6ii? The Sony is RX10IV is advertised as such. Nobody ever seems to know how good weather sealing on any camera is, but in Iceland, it might matter.

I use an RX10MIV when I kayak and it is “weathersealed” I guess as well as one can weatherseal a long zoom bridge camera. I have issues with its ergonomics, by far my least favorite camera to shoot, but it gets me a FF equivalent range of 24-600mm at f/4 in a kayak, where getting that range with a larger sensor is unwieldy. Doing an identical crop on the crop sensor would potentially give you a slight edge in IQ due to the larger sensor, but you wouldn’t be doing an identical crop. They’re very close in resolution so you’d be losing a lot more resolution with the Z50. I often have to push the ISO on the RX10MIV to 800 or even 1600 to get the shutter speed needed for BIF so everything goes through Topaz Denoise and it does a good job. You might get less noise at those ISO’s with the Z50, but also realize that the 50-250 lens that gets you to 375mm equivalent has a max aperture of f/6.3 at that length, (and f/4.5 at the short end), so right off the bat you’re losing a stop and a third. I would take both. The Z50 is a great little camera, but if you need the reach for the puffins take the Sony too. The Clear Image Zoom looks pretty impressive for a digital zoom but I’ve never used it because in shooting raw. You can still turn it on in raw and you’ll see the zoom in the viewfinder, but the raw image will be the 600mm view and not what you saw at 1200mm.

No need to challenge what you say. I just laugh at it.
