Love the closeups of the roosters. As a kid I remember those roosters being a bit crabby at time. The little girl is precious - noticed that she was barefoot. Another wonderful set, Joe.

Thank you Rowedean, yes those roosters gave me my main color-push in this set. From what I remember, the younger children were mainly barefoot in this part of the trip, and she is a precious little one.

With our iron buffalo trucks, we visit the village of an Akha hill tribe and notice that there seems to be quite a fascination in this village and indeed in the area with chicken: we encountered a shrine seemingly dedicated to chicken, populated and surrounded by a large number of chicken statues and observed a number of beautiful chicken and roosters parading in the village. From my research, I learned that apparently chicken actually originated in South East Asia, so we really are on their home turf. Besides the chicken, we also notice some of the locals in their tribal fineries and I was pleased to be able to capture a few images of two ladies and a young girl.

The roosters, both real and not, are interesting and colorful. But I really like the headgear on the women and child here. Most interesting. I’m not sure it’s practical but it certainly is fascinating.

Thanks for looking and commenting, Ellen. These statues of roosters really surprised us and I was lucky to also capture some real live, beautiful roosters in the village. As to the headgear that these women wear, I was assuming that these were just for ceremonial purposes, not for real life. But I just decided to dig in a bit further online, and found an interesting article that states that the Akha women wear these headgears all the time, even when sleeping. That really surprised me.

Here is a link to that article, which I really just skimmed to find my answer. You might be interested to view it. I was going to add the link, but I just realized that it showed as not secure, so I will not do so. If you want to see it, google: Akha headdress: Iconic Ethnicity
