Shall I update my camera?

Your original OM-D1 has 16 megapixels, it is still an excellent camera and while the OM-1 Mk II has 20 megapixels you should not expect a significant change in quality in your images. Yes, the new camera has better technology but from your own words only image quality is important to you.
Image quality starts with good lenses so if you pair your camera with the excellent optics made by Olympus you should produce sharp images similar to those of the Mk II using the same lenses. The OM-1 Mk II has the 50 megapixels resolution mode but I am not familiar with it. Do you need 50 megapixels?

My Olympus bodies are 16 megapixels and I am very satisfied with the images I get from them. I usually enlarge to 12x18 inches and I can see all of the details in those prints. That is enough for my needs.
Use your money for better optics.

I would think the current update is the OM-1 but I thought the OP doesn't want to spend more than the $700.

You can save the most money by not buying equipment you don't need.

Search for "Camera A vs Camera B," and see how they compare. Although your current camera is probably working fine, maybe the one you're considering offers advantages. Then you can sell you other camera on eBay - or here - and defray the cost of the new one.

Going from 16 mp to 20 mp is a resolution increase of about 10%. You are unlikely to see a visible difference...none in the media where you say you publish your images. Your largest possible print (which you say you don't do) will increase only slightly if you do start printing. You say that you are not interested in functions, bells, and whistles. So unless you just want a newer, shinier camera, there does not appear to be a compelling reason to "need" to pursue this update path.

Why would you think anyone here can answer your question. That is for you, and only you, to decide. Get real!

I hate giving opinions on this subject, but here goes.

If you can spare the amount of money without hurting yourself financially, and the new purchase gives you pleasure, I say go for it.

Simple answer, no. After a certain point more megapixels don't give you a better picture and 16 is already above that threshold. You will get more from upgrading your glass

Resolution is proportional to the square root of the number of pixels (since an image covers a two-dimensional area). Going from 16 to 20 Max is like a 12% increase. IMHO, that is not significant. If that is the ONLY reason you want to update your camera, the answer is no.

I'm not after the most recently introduced camera.

My present camera is an Olympus OMD Mark one and the new one would be an OMD Mark Two. I'm only conderned about image quality and not additional features other image quality.

I have a 16X20 photo of Devil's Tower taken with a Pentax K-x, a 12mp crop sensor, which looks quite good, hanging on my wall. If you want to go for a few more mp and can afford it, go ahead. I will say that my upgrade to my K-70, a 24mp crop sensor, did seem to have more clarity when I looked at the photos on the preview screen, Not sure how it would affect a 16X20 print, Haven't printed any yet.

If you are happy with the old one, stay with it.
I doubt the 20 MP will give much better images, but a new camera will probably have new improved features. Only you can decide after reviewing the camera description if it is worth the money. Good luck either way.

I agree. My largest print I ever made was 56 inches from a Nikon D300s, a 12 MP camera. The increase in MP you are considering by itself IMO is not enough of a reason to spend $700 on a new camera.

Thanks for your thoughts. I'm not really interested in bells and whistles, just image quality.

Hmmm.... My OM-D E-M10.1 (16mp) produces stunningly sharp 24x30 photo prints that stand up to "walk up close lookyloos..." A Sigma 30mm F/1.4 lens is usually on that camera. 19 & 60mm Art lenses at hand for fun.

~ Would I get a newer model OM-D? Sure. If I waned somthin' new to play with - It wouldn'd be 'cause.O.print quality!
