T-Mobile identifies 80% of spam calls as "Spam Likely". When I get a call from an out of town number I don't recognize, I generally send it to voice mail. If they really want me, they'll leave a message. If they're spammers, they move on.

I notice that these things come in waves. I'll get 4-5 calls from the same "Your car warranty has expired and you're gonna get stuck with some huge bills" scammers on the same day, but from random numbers all over the country. Every now and then the call originates outside the country. I ignore ALL of those.

I have an app on my phone that identifies spam calls - so I simply do not answer them. If it says "verified number," then I answer. The problem was, I placed an emergency call to my doctor some time back. His office called back from a different number and I had no idea who it was. They did leave a message, but I didn't get it until hours later. Also, I'm a vendor in art shows and occasionally visitors to my booth want to call me later. Obviously, they aren't in my contact list, so I don't know who they are and usually don't answer. Then we play telephone tag a lot and they get discouraged. I think all robo calls and telemarketing calls should be outlawed!!!!!

I’ve been using this for some time now. In my experience with the feature I have found that people who want to speak with you or have something for you will leave a voicemail. The robo calls for the most part just hang up. I have also noticed that the volume of robo calls has decreased greatly since I started using the feature.

Direct TV leaves 2 to 3 voicemails a day. They are so annoying that I would never have Direct TV be my provider. They need to fine companies that call when you are on the do not call list. That would slow it down a bit.

Unfortunately true. “A live one.”

I have found that most robo calls automatically hang up after 6-7 rings or less. If it does not ring more than 7 times, I don’t even consider answering it. Common courtesy is to let it ring at least 10 times before hanging up if you really want to talk to someone. Perfect; maybe not. But have had no complaints from people I am interested in talking to.

My Moto phone has a feature I love. It can screen calls
When an unknown number is calling my phone, I just touch screen call and the caller gets a message that says:

"The person you are calling is using call screening, please state your name and the reason you are calling."
If they have something to say it will show up as text on the screen. I then have the option to talk to the caller or hang up. Most of the time they hang up within seconds when they hear the message.

Before they can launch into their sales pitch i ask for their mailing address. Throws them off, and they usually hang up. If they ask why; "Because if you aren't willing to give me your mailing address you are likely not legitimate." If i get it i tell them "thanks, and since I'm on the federal do not call list I'll be sending you my bill", and hang up.

Correct, that's why it is wise to never answer. Resist the temptation to answer---even tho you are hoping it is a live person who will receive the whistle or airhorn you blow into the phone.

Actually, a study by a group at North Carolina State University found that answering robocalls does not increase the likelihood of being called again:

Actually, NCSU does not know exactly what the caller does with the info about a verified active number.

When we moved, we kept our cell phone numers from our old state. Everyone we know from there is in our contacts. I'd say that 95% of our junk calls spoof being from our old state, so they're obvious.

The problem I see here is that some businesses, doctor's offices, or other places will make legitimate calls from a phone with a different number than the listed one so as to not tie up the incoming calls. One of those calls missed may be one that is important and time sensitive.

I truly believe that phone companies can stop robo calls but won't because they are somehow making money from them. I have seen where a person can purchase a program to make numerous robo call per hour, and it is legal. It even allows the caller to spoof numbers. Spoofed numbers are a bane in my opinion. I have received a robo call from my own number on a couple of occasions, complete with my name on the caller ID.

I wonder if a class action law suit against phone companies for allowing robo calls and spoofed numbers for harassment and unnecessary interruptions, not to mention the millions of dollars scammed from people by crooks, would motivate phone companies to stop the insanity.
