Anybody else interested in a section on aerial photography? This is a picture of my neighborhood.

Add me to the list of happy DJI Mini 2 users. Here is a link to a photo I took a few months ago https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-716520-1.html

I get the reason why people are attracted to drone photography. Unfortunately, I have run into situations where trying to take pictures of sunsets and certain landscapes, I've had to deal with drone photographers who feel that it's not they're problem if they are flying their drone in and around the area Im trying to photograph! it's a drag to have to deal with a drone flying in and out of your photos. Especially when there will only be so much time before the sun sets! Some have been respectful, and some............not so much!

I, too, have been considering a drone. Some of my main hesitations include:
1. Not being allowed to use a drone in the National Parks where I do most of my photography. Also restrictions on its use in many other areas where I would consider its use.
2. DJI being the most affordable and capable drone for a reasonable photo quality but there are concerns about possible embedded Chinese spyware and also a mention of government restrictions on its use. The new Sony one sounds great but it's $10K
3. Weather use limitations where I would be adding it to my already over packed backpack and possibly not being able to use at all during a photo shoot.

It would be no fun taking pictures in National Parks if most of your shots included a nice looking drone or two or three! That's one of the great reasons that drones are restricted there, and many other areas.... thank goodness!

Sadly, sometimes that's also true for photographers without drones.

Yes, I've had people walk in and set their tripod up right in front of me! I wasn't sure if they were just clueless, or didn't give a shit! Either way, I let them know they were blocking my shot!

Oh come on now, the tiny spec a drone would make in such an image is probably less than a sensor spot would take up on your image. One click and it's removed. You're making a mountain out of a spot of dirt really.

Again, this is really a non event. If a drone were to get in your sunset photos, for the most part, drones are flying through your scene. Therefore, you just take two image a second apart and then remove the drone form your image when you overlap. A bird in your image would be just as bad when you think about it.

A drone up in the air is so small that it is often smaller than a bird and could be mistaken for a bird. Rarely is it ever going to be so close to you that it can be clearly seen as a drone and if it is, just remove it with a click or two. I think we are getting too concerned about something that is rarely ever a problem, but people like to try and blame drone for everything.

I agree with everything you said, nevertheless I try to be aware of people who might be disturbed by what I'm doing, be it drone photography or taking photos with my camera, and act accordingly. A little empathy goes a long way in these situations.

As to your point about blaming. It's not just drones that get blamed, but it's anything new. You've heard of Luddites? Well in just my lifetime, new things that have been blamed for all sorts of drastic outcomes include TVs, rock music, pot, mini skirts, contraceptives, board games, video games, cell phones, and most recently, social media. I'm sure that other UHH's can think of many other additions to this list!

I've been flying drones for about three years or so and they offer a completely different aspect to photography. I've been a pilot for many, many years, so it was not a shock to see the world from that viewpoint, though it does allow me to stop at any point above the ground, compose and get a great image. And get photos from a point of view that no manned aircraft could ever get, for a photo.

Anyone thinking about it, just do it, it's not a big deal to learn how to fly one, they are very easy to fly really. And anything under 250gms will not need to be registered with the FAA, for those who wondered about that.

Here are just a few of my drone photos, including some fun ones of my children. Oh and a seven image 110 degree pano shot, that I stitched together, of a storm over the lake taken from west to just past the east.

"And anything under 250gms will not need to be registered with the FAA"

That's true, but not the only part.

Current rules, new in 2021, require you to be licensed in one of two ways. For strict recreational use you need what the FAA calls is a "TRUST" license. It is free, easy, online and takes about 20 minutes. You can't flunk. The "test" won't let you. At the end, you get a certificate.

The other way is much more complex, harder and takes time. It is called a "Part 107" commercial certificate. Self study can work, but taking an online, in depth course works better. You get the 107 license when you complete a proctored exam. Total cost will be about $300.

It's not the only part, however, it is the only part of interest for the person that asked what weight must it be under to not have to register it. And that is what I was replying to. Normally no need to go into the details of all the options for pro use like Part 107 because that just confuses and frightens people. That is why I did not mention anything other than what I did.

Keep in mind that many communities (mine for one) have laws against the use of drones over private property.
