I saw your pictures with the 100- 500 and they were better than ok. I think the 300 with a 2x extender is sharper than the 600. There are many examples of this combination. Here is a link to a recent post on UHH.

Well, I will just have to make due with the 600mm in Yellowstone it will have a 1.4 on it. Many last winter had a 2x on the 600mm and did well. One set of wolves I had the Canon 800mm f 11 and 1.4 and still wanted more! It actually did surprisingly well for a whole lot less money! These guys were close to 300 yard away, heavy crop! Hand held, it is easy to hand hold this lens, the 600mm not so much!
I have the 800 f11 and it is an exceptional lens especially when you consider its weight and cost. For a 300 yard shot, I think the wolf is exceptional. One thing about the 600 is that there is little degradation when you add extenders. I have stacked 1.4 and 2x on the 600 and got acceptable photos, but it depends on the subject and usage.
I saw your photos of Yellowstone last year and I know you will do great with the 600 mm. You have a good eye, patience and the technical ability to do great work. As you and I both know, it is the photographer that makes great photos. Equipment merely improves the quality. I am very much looking forward to your coming photos of Yellowstone.
I don't meant to ramble but I really enjoyed your photos of Africa, as I do all of your work.

Thank you very very much for the pep talk! I think I will like it, just wish it was half the weight and size….😏
