Not sure which this is!
All taken at 600mm & f4 1/2000 on a monopod.

I just got this lens and maybe I'm expecting too much, but I thought these would be much sharper. Does anyone have this lens? I'm sure there is a learning curve, but I was expecting wow better for the $'s spent on this lens!
Any tips on using a big prime are welcome. I have a monopod with the Wimberley MH-100 MonoGimbal Head for Monopods. I may get a gimbal for my tripod, just not feeling flush right now....

These shots are great. I have a bunch of Eagles with a variety of Nikon lenses. I might have a few as good, but none better. How far away were you? That is always an issue for me out here.

The last two shots show how much crop. It was up high in a tree but only 40 yards away. That is why the last two photos! I don’t do distance well!

Looks like a juvie Bald to me .....

I have found that much of my Eagle and wildlife birds are done with 400mm and 1.4X on crop frame = 560mm = 840mm full frame equivalent. A friend I some times shoot with uses the 600 f4 with 1.4X (840mm) mostly hand held ! Managing the size/weight of 600 f4 is an ongoing challenge for most people
The 400mm f4 DO II with 1.4 and 2X is quite a bit easier to manage - cheaper too ! IQ difference ??

Great shots!! The beak is the only way I can tell them apart...it looks like this one is a Juv Bald Eagle. My favorite birds to photograph.

Nice photos!
Looks like a Baldy to me😉
I would probably try f 5.6 or 6.3 with that big lens at that distance, and slower shutter. YMMV😉

I think the detail is about what I get with the 600. Distance is a factor. Also, a particularly like the gimbal head on a tripod. I think what you are paying for is the f4. Some of the other primes provide greater detail in my opinion. At the price of these lenses, you might expect to be able to see tomorrow.

Yes, I was expecting to next month! Other primes such as the 400 2.8? I went for the 600mm because in Yellowstone you have to be 100 yards from bears, wolves etc. I got some ok photos with my 100-500, but wanted much sharper images….. this Eagle certainly was closer than the wolves in Yellowstone…
