Nice photos!
Looks like a Baldy to me😉
I would probably try f 5.6 or 6.3 with that big lens at that distance, and slower shutter. YMMV😉

I thought I could go slower, but was concerned about movement with the monopod which I understand is really magnified with a big lens.

Great shots!! The beak is the only way I can tell them apart...it looks like this one is a Juv Bald Eagle. My favorite birds to photograph.

Wow, thanks, this really helps!

It is a Canon RF 600mm f4!

I did not realize the RF was available yet I am confident the IQ of a RF lens surpasses any EF versions .....

Not sure which this is!
All taken at 600mm & f4 1/2000 on a monopod.

I just got this lens and maybe I'm expecting too much, but I thought these would be much sharper. Does anyone have this lens? I'm sure there is a learning curve, but I was expecting wow better for the $'s spent on this lens!
Any tips on using a big prime are welcome. I have a monopod with the Wimberley MH-100 MonoGimbal Head for Monopods. I may get a gimbal for my tripod, just not feeling flush right now....

Seems to me that these are pretty sharp. Is there a little camera shake going on, or perhaps a bit of movement with your subject? Perhaps, and these are still is a possibility of these issues showing up at 1/2000. IMO, faster is better and if I were out with a lens of this length with a monopod, I would try to be at 1/3200 or 1/4000. Also, with sensors the way they are with the new cameras, they can handle higher ISO's than previous versions.

But I think you will find that over the long haul you are going to get your best results on a tripod with a gimbal. It will give you more flexibility allowing slower shutter speeds compared to the monopod. And this is going to be compounded when you start using 1.4 and 2x converters.

Larry mentioned the alternative of a 400 with a 1.4x converter. Yes, that is a possibility, but I would venture to to say that the 600mm f/4 primes, what ever make, are the wildlife photographers ultimate tool. Not just for sharpness and length, but for the backgrounds these lenses can give. Take a look at this YouTube video by Patrick Murphy-Racey at around 9 minutes when he compares the "Boque" created with 600mm prime and the 400mm f/2.8. Eventhough he is comparing Sony lenses, the analysis should be the same for other manufacturers. ("My favorite 5 Sony lenses" on YouTube).

Bottom line, I find it difficult to believe that Canon would be putting a new prime out that is substandard as far as sharpness, especially with their top of the line prime lenses. (I would question the 800mm f/11). I think you will find when you mount this properly, you will be VERY pleased with the results.

Enjoy and looking forward to seeing more.

These are very nice shots.

I think this is a juvenile. Adult eagles have a white crest. Like the one in this old post of mine.

Yes, I was expecting to next month! Other primes such as the 400 2.8? I went for the 600mm because in Yellowstone you have to be 100 yards from bears, wolves etc. I got some ok photos with my 100-500, but wanted much sharper images….. this Eagle certainly was closer than the wolves in Yellowstone…

I don't have personal experience with big glass. BUT: These are about as sharp as I've seen. Even Download, the eyes and beaks are sharp. A slight rim lighting around one of the beaks. The feather detail is crisp. I've seen worse in major Photo Publications.

Well thank you! It is good to know I have a fan also! I suppose a gimbal is in my future for the tripod…. And yes, I should have done a better job on the beak…
