Are the lenses you have now cropped lenses? If so you will have to stay with cropped to continue to use them. If not your choice is to stay with cropped camera or start again with full frame, Today the SLR market is loaded with reduced price deals in new and used. The Mirror less Canon has an adapter (I use) for the SLR lenses.

The EF-RF adapter also enables all EF-S lenses onto the RF bodies for seamless operation. The potential drawback is the enforced cropping mode of the EOS-R series bodies when the EF-S lens is mounted. This crop could push your pixel resolution down to the 10MP range, much less than most of your EOS DSLR options with the same lenses. But, a high MP body like the EOS R5 could still deliver 28MP 'cropped' images when an EF-S lens mounted.

Sorry Hoggers but I have a conundrum. My beloved Canon 7d Mark 1 has died. I have a quote and can get it fixed for around $550 pacific pesos (Australian Dollars). I have a number of lenses and am thinking about a used 7d Mark 2. I actually think this would be fine if I can get a good one ... cost around $1200. Then I read about what the EOS R6 can do .. and then the R3!! The R3 sounds great ,, but $8.5k?? OK, I can afford it but I am cheap! Anyone got any views or should I just splurge??

I bought a used 7D Mk ll. It had 10000 clicks--like new. Love this camera($600). It really works well with the Canon 100-400 ll lens. Hard to beat -see image of Reddish Egret

I’m using a 500 f4 with adapter on the R5 and its amazing as well as the EF 70-200 so far but my 100-400 ll and EF 24-105 and 16-35 would likewise work well I have no doubt.

I have two "retired" 7D (Mark I)... Both still work fine, but when they each hit 150,000 shutter actuations I started shopping for an update. Canon rated the 7D for 150K clicks, though these ratings are always just an estimated average. Some cameras don't live as long, others outlive their expected lifespan... some seem to last forever (there are 5D models that were rated for 150K still clicking after 500K and even 1 million shots).

I bought a pair of 7D Mark II and can assure you they're an excellent upgrade. Especially for someone who enjoyed using 7D. The Mark II's seemed to take all that was good about the original and build on it. In fact, in a lot of ways I consider 7D Mark II superior to 90D that were supposed to replace them (and 80D, of course). The 7DII's 65-point AF system is unique to the model and more configurable, faster and better tracking than the original 7D's or the 90D's! The 90D may have a superior Live View AF system, but it's not something I use much. Also, 7D Mark II are rated to do 200,000 clicks (while 90D is rated to do 120,000).

In my opinion Canon did a great job with 90D and it's a great camera. But, unless you really need the 32.5MP of the 90D (which also demands very good glass and is more susceptible to camera shake), the 20MP of the 7DII is plenty for a lot of things, even preferable for high volume stuff like the sports photography I do. Compared to 90D the 7DII is considerably more robust with a magnesium shell and better sealed for weather resistance.

I'm sending you a PM with a link to a US source for 7DII, in case you decide to buy one. I don't know how the US $ and your $ compare at the moment, or if that seller also has outlets "down under", or what the shipping from US to there might cost (I know it's pricey coming the other way). But it may be a good source for you.

You might look at this as a stop-gap.... There's a lot of speculation that Canon might introduce a mirrorless 7D with the RF-mount next year. The model name "R7" has been floated around a lot, but is pure guesswork by the rumormongers. If/when Canon introduces a mirrorless 7D with the AF system of the R3 and other tech from R5/R6/R3... I'll be in line to buy a couple! I'd prefer it be kept around 24MP (not 32.5MP) and I specifically want APS-C... not full frame... for my primary user cameras. APS-C are best for 90% of what I do, largely because they allow me to use much smaller, lighter lenses. I will probably get an R-series full frame model, too... but for other purposes and less frequent use.

From what I have seen from friends and heard.. the R5 is great, MY issue is having to buy thos expensive R lenses...

I prefer primes, so the 100 500 will not cut it and the 600 f4 is $13K .. sorry, No can DO

I was in the exact same spot with the 7d and the guys here really helped especially @CHG_Canon in helping me make the leap from DSLR to Mirrorless. I opted for the R5 and though a big decision it was definitely the right one for me. Its a great camera but there’s a learning curve for sure. Well worth the effort. Amazing camera!

I have the R6 and am very happy with what 20MP and the same autofocus as the R5 which costs twice as much can do. Would I like an R5, darn right I would, but you can get an R6 and the amazing RF100-550L lens for a bit more than an R5 alone and less than an R3. You can't go wrong with either one, the R series is the way to go in my humble opinion.

You don't have to buy RF lenses. Any EF or EF-s lens works as well or better on any R series Canon. All it takes is a $100 adapter. Canon is also beginning to produce less expensive lenses for the R series.

I have heard and read the adapter slows the AF for BIF ... but thanks for the response.

Heard from who? Someone who doesn't know what they're talking about maybe?

Not true at all. The adapter is only a spacer. No optics of any kind. You are probably confusing extenders with adapters. My one remaining EF lens is an EF 100-400 L II. It works every bit as well and in some ways better on my R5 with an adapter then it did on my 5DIV.

You are a funny guy, at this moment, I don't have access to the "online chit chat" where I read this... I think it was in one of the FB forums I belong...

So I am "guessing" you are stating NO delay to focus an R5 with an Adaptor to a 500 f4 L lens?
sounds incredulous to me ...my problem here would be twofold though since 100 500 lens is too short for my needs and I use a TC1.4x with the 500 to get a minimum of 700mm together. I believe this combo on the 5Dmkiii
body does SLOW the autofocus speed "some", particularly with BIF images... thanks

One other point I failed to share... as I prefer primes... the R 600f4 prime is out of my price range, and most of humanity as well ... so it is MY contention a Prime is always sharper [ all things being equal] than a zoom, thus the R zoom will not work for me and the 600 is out of my league, being partly human myself...

so for the Time Being, I must use the OLD technology of 5Dmkiii + TC 1.4, bear its Heavy wt and suffer until a better combo can be obtained... the 5dMkiv is getting cheaper by the minute!

Here is an image that was taken yesterday with my OUTDATED rig..

cheers
