Sorry Hoggers but I have a conundrum. My beloved Canon 7d Mark 1 has died. I have a quote and can get it fixed for around $550 pacific pesos (Australian Dollars). I have a number of lenses and am thinking about a used 7d Mark 2. I actually think this would be fine if I can get a good one ... cost around $1200. Then I read about what the EOS R6 can do .. and then the R3!! The R3 sounds great ,, but $8.5k?? OK, I can afford it but I am cheap! Anyone got any views or should I just splurge??
I have two "retired" 7D (Mark I)... Both still work fine, but when they each hit 150,000 shutter actuations I started shopping for an update. Canon rated the 7D for 150K clicks, though these ratings are always just an estimated average. Some cameras don't live as long, others outlive their expected lifespan... some seem to last forever (there are 5D models that were rated for 150K still clicking after 500K and even 1 million shots).
I bought a pair of 7D Mark II and can assure you they're an excellent upgrade. Especially for someone who enjoyed using 7D. The Mark II's seemed to take all that was good about the original and build on it. In fact, in a lot of ways I consider 7D Mark II superior to 90D that were supposed to replace them (and 80D, of course). The 7DII's 65-point AF system is unique to the model and more configurable, faster and better tracking than the original 7D's or the 90D's! The 90D may have a superior Live View AF system, but it's not something I use much. Also, 7D Mark II are rated to do 200,000 clicks (while 90D is rated to do 120,000).
In my opinion Canon did a great job with 90D and it's a great camera. But, unless you really need the 32.5MP of the 90D (which also demands very good glass and is more susceptible to camera shake), the 20MP of the 7DII is plenty for a lot of things, even preferable for high volume stuff like the sports photography I do. Compared to 90D the 7DII is considerably more robust with a magnesium shell and better sealed for weather resistance.
I'm sending you a PM with a link to a US source for 7DII, in case you decide to buy one. I don't know how the US $ and your $ compare at the moment, or if that seller also has outlets "down under", or what the shipping from US to there might cost (I know it's pricey coming the other way). But it may be a good source for you.
You might look at this as a stop-gap.... There's a lot of speculation that Canon might introduce a mirrorless 7D with the RF-mount next year. The model name "R7" has been floated around a lot, but is pure guesswork by the rumormongers. If/when Canon introduces a mirrorless 7D with the AF system of the R3 and other tech from R5/R6/R3... I'll be in line to buy a couple! I'd prefer it be kept around 24MP (not 32.5MP) and I specifically want APS-C... not full frame... for my primary user cameras. APS-C are best for 90% of what I do, largely because they allow me to use much smaller, lighter lenses. I will probably get an R-series full frame model, too... but for other purposes and less frequent use.
