Sorry Hoggers but I have a conundrum. My beloved Canon 7d Mark 1 has died. I have a quote and can get it fixed for around $550 pacific pesos (Australian Dollars). I have a number of lenses and am thinking about a used 7d Mark 2. I actually think this would be fine if I can get a good one ... cost around $1200. Then I read about what the EOS R6 can do .. and then the R3!! The R3 sounds great ,, but $8.5k?? OK, I can afford it but I am cheap! Anyone got any views or should I just splurge??

First, you can probably buy another original 7D for less than the repair. Next, putting new money onto a camera as old as the 7DII is probably not a good approach, even buying a used 7DII.

That leaves you with a newer 90D that is the next step / update to the 7D line as Canon won't make a v III in that series. Or, look at the usage life of your EOS 7D and consider if you can get that long or longer from the EOS R6.

The only issue you must seriously consider is the loss of the 1.6x crop factor in the only modest pixel resolution increase of the full-frame R6 (20MP). The R3 doesn't interest me much personally, being just another 24MP sensor in a souped-up hotrod body. Without purposefully trying to spend your money, the EOS R5 is really the sweet-spot combination of high-performance and pixel resolution (45MP).

Yes, camera repair is very expensive, unfortunately. Look for used ones on eBay - and get the number of shutter actuations. If you're considering different models, look for reviews and comparisons online. there are no bad model Canons, but one might have features you prefer.

Put your broken camera on eBay - "For Parts."

DSLRs will be around for a long time, and most do an excellent job. The industry, particularly Canon, is shifting to mirrorless. All of their design and development is being put into that, not DSLRs. Personally, I prefer to look ahead, which is why I made the switch to mirrorless a few years ago with an R. I now have an R5 and I suggest you take a look at it. A truly exceptional camera, for a lot less then an R3. I had a 70D, a 6D, a 7DII, a 5DIV and an R. I wouldn't trade my R5 for any of them, or for all of them even. OK, you're cheap. Not necessarily a bad thing, but, don't let frugality be your only buying guide. Which camera will give you the features and capabilities you want so that you can utilize the real worth of your choice?

I'd go for the R5, unless you're heavily invested in lenses.

If you decide to go with the Canon R5 or R6 your current Canon lens will seamlessly adapt with a Canon adapter.
Just another option.

I can't afford one right now, but unless aliens drop something better on us, I am for sure hoping to get the R5! I realize the R3 is technically "better", but the R5 is firmly in the sweet spot, ticks all the boxes for me, and, although not cheap, the price is reasonable.

I agree with the conclusion of CHG. I moved from a 5D IV to a R5. The jump from the megapixels in the 5D to the R5 seems stunning to me, and was well worth the money. The clarity is so pronounce that when I view the results on the screen it almost seems 3D.

I have a Canon 80D that I will sell you for $600. It is in excellent condition. I recently upgraded to the R5 and am not looking back.

I was in the exact same spot with the 7d and the guys here really helped especially @CHG_Canon in helping me make the leap from DSLR to Mirrorless. I opted for the R5 and though a big decision it was definitely the right one for me. Its a great camera but there’s a learning curve for sure. Well worth the effort. Amazing camera!
