We made that trip in 2018, it was just wonderful! I hope you can spend a couple of extra days in Amsterdam before the cruise. A big lens left on board would allow you to capture distant views along the way since so much shooting will take place while on the canals and river. Here is one taken while on the Utrecht Canal.

I share the same opinion, FWIW.

As whom?

You'll be trying to get shots of distant hilltop castles on the Rhine south of Coblenz. And there will be plenty of other opportunities for telephoto and wide-angle shots along the way. The Sigma 18-200 lens, as mentioned by Longshadow, or another 18-200 lens would give you pretty much all the options you'd want. My 18-200 is my basic lens.

My wife and I have taken two Viking trips that included that route. On the first, I brought a Canon 60D with a 24-105 f4L. Also brought a Canon SX60 bridge camera for the long shots from the boat. The 60D was the camera of choice for all the excursions. On the second trip, the same SX60 came along but I left the 60D and lens home, and elected to bring a Canon G16 compact instead. If you aren’t interested in spending more money and don’t mind that weight of the combination, the cropped body and 18-400 is definitely my recommendation. We’ve booked a Viking cruise on the Danube next year and my planned bring along will be Canon G1x iii and a G3x.

Have taken several river cruises. I took an 28-200 lens which covered all I needed. Taking extra lenses are added weight. One lens will do except if you have a specific type of photography in mind which would call for something special. the zoom will suffice for everyday photos. Have fun.

We did a Viking cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest in 2017. I took the vast majority of my images with the 24-105L, (my main walkaround lens) or the 70-300L. I spent a lot of time on the top deck taking pictures of the various castles, vineyards, villages, etc. and used the 70-300 most of the time. I did take my Sigma 150-600 with me but I don't think I ever used it and would definitely not take it again.

Thanks. I didn’t know what “Quote Reply was. Same as insman1132. There were a few shots from the ship where 400 would have been helpful, especially on a crop sensor. After the trip, I bought a 80-400 lens so I wouldn’t be caught like that again. Maybe you can save the 18-400 for the onboard shooting and use other lighter lenses for walking around?

Did that trip the other way a “few” years ago with a D7000 and an 18-300.
Also had a good (raw capable) compact and never needed anything else. Great trip. HAVE FUN.

If you prefer carrying only one lens, I would recommend a Canon 18-135mm for your trip. I have the USM version which is my "walk around" lens. This is a great multi-purpose lens which covers a good range of focal length. I understand that the 18-135mm STM version is also a very good lens. The 18-135mm USM lens can be purchased for as little as $400.00 used. A new copy is about $599.00. For travel, I will often bring my Canon SX50 bridge camera along for when I need the extra long 1200mm reach.

Taking the 10-22 and 55-250 leaves a big hole in the "normal" range when using an APS-C camera. Also bring the 18-55. You will be on a boat, so weight is not the issue. When in port you don't have to take all three with you. You will want that full range while on board taking in the scenery -- then take the one or two you will need on shore and leave the rest on the boat that day. Or buy a lens such as 18-200 and only take it. Or buy a second used Canon D-series body and keep one lens on each when ashore. Keep in mind that shore excursions move quickly and leave little time for fiddling with lens swapping.

Done 5 River Cruises in Europe, and I see no reason to carry all your kit. 18-55 and 55 - 250 will do the job nicely for you.
I did take a bridge Nikon on one cruise, and really enjoyed the versatility and light weight.
Whatever you decide, you'll have a great time!

I'm doing the same trip in May after a cruise through a couple of Norway fjords. My main lens will be a 24-120 f4.0. I will probably include an 80-200 f2.8 as well.

If all pans out we are planning to go on a River cruise in April from Amsterdam to Basel. I have a Canon 80D with 2 kit lenses. 18-55 and 55-250. I also have a 50 mm a 10-22 and big 18-400. Don’t want to take the 400, too heavy. If you were to take one or two of the lenses above which would it be? 2nd question. If none of the above are decent, What would you buy if you had to take just one travel lens

I did that same river cruise a few years ago. I had a Nikon full frame DSLR. Most used lens was my 24-85mm Nikon lens. I also had a fast prime lens for night time shots from the boat of major cities and indoor stuff. And I had a 70-200mm f4. The prime to take is a function of what you own and your personal needs. I took a 35mm.

I was the only one of the trip that used a full frame camera. Most used cell phones and point and shoots.

I, like many others above, have taken that trip. I used my D7100 with the 18-400 lens and found that covered all my needs. The majority of my shots were taken at <100mm, but shooting castles and such from the boat the 400 end worked great.

My wife just returned from a Viking tour from Budapest to Passau. She has a wonderful time, nbut the pandemic really took it’s toll on the tour. The longship had a capacity of 190 guests and requires a crew of 45 to operate. The number of guests onboard was 38. Needless to say, she and her companions got first class service.
She only had an IPhone 11, I think, and it did a very good job. Here are a couple of her shots.
