"However for a distant shot, my guess is the RX10 m3 would be better than any iPhone. "

Is that because of the I phone's small sensor?

It’s because of the lens.

For the longer lens. The Sony extends to 600mm equivalent while the XR only has a 28mm equivalent lens. It does have a 5x digital zoom, which can get you to 140, but with a lot of image degradation, especially considering it’s only a 12 megapixel camera. If you’re shooting JPEG’s with the Sony it also has “Clear Image Zoom” which can double the zoom to 1200 with very little degradation.

Not sure who this was directed to, but as answered already (posted while typing mine), it is because the Sony has
a 8.8 to 220mm lens (35mm Equivalent Focal Length: 24 to 600mm). Even the best iPhone only has a 2x optical zoom though I believe a 10x optical zoom has been rumored to be in the future.

My iPhone 11 has 5x. The specs I saw for the XR said 10x but upon further research it has the same 5x of the 11.

True to a point, yes I can get a better cellphone photo of the moon than that, but here’s one I took with my RX10MIV that nobody could get with a cellphone.

I believe you are referring to digital zoom, not optical. The iPhone 11 pro only has a 2x optical zoom:

"In fact, it is solely that third extra camera that makes the difference between the entry-level iPhone 11 and its Pro siblings. Both the iPhone 11 Pro and the iPhone 11 Pro Max have the same cameras as the iPhone 11, they just also have a 52mm telephoto lens.

That telephoto lens gives the Pro phones a 2X optical zoom in, and even up to a 10X digital zoom in. "

It only has digital zoom. The regular iPhone 11 has 2 lenses, a 26mm equivalent and a 13mm. If you tap the 1x on the screen it switches to the 13mm and reads 0.5x. To go any closer takes the 5x digital zoom. Only the Pro has the telephoto. Anyway the main point being that the iPhone can’t come close to tge reach of the Sony

I use the sony rx10 mk3 and it is wonderful. Shooting raw makes a big difference if you're going to post-process, which I do all the time. That is why I use a camera. That range it has has changed my photography style in fact. It makes me think in terms of composition and compression of the scene. Have fun.

My old LG V20 has regular and zoom lens and self-ie lens.

Pretty sure the zoom is 2x as well. I've learned early on that any amount of digital zoom is pretty much doomed to failure.

It’s basically the same as cropping.

With low resolution sensors any amount would reduce quality but with the newer high resolution sensors you can get away with some digital zoom.

I'm not an Apple user but modern phone cameras have matched lenses for their various focal lengths and plus digital zooms. Some have native resolutions of over 100mp so their digital zoom are very good when modestly applied.

They won't match the IQ of mid range and top end DSLRs and ML cameras with excellent lenses, but they are at least or better than lower end cameras. And they are so feature rich no conventional camera can compete.

What phone has a 100mp native resolution camera? Please state the brand and model.
