I know what you mean. When I'm in an area where lots of people are taking pictures, it's unusual to see many DSLRs. It's mostly cell phones and tablets.

Before cell phone cameras those people would not have taken pics.

I'm still trying to imagine myself as a successful photographer, but will let the world know when that happens with my cell phone.

For most people, the cellphone as a still and movie camera, is just a modern day replacement for the Brownie and later the point & shoot digital. While there are photographers that have done their best to wring the best out of the cellphone, and their work is amazing, the average user is just going to use it for selfies and documenting their travels. It is a useful tool when used within its capabilities. Documenting wrecks for insurance purposes, making a copy of a business card or document, filming lectures, and documenting construction site progress are just a few uses. It is a camera and you do have it with you almost always.

A photographer brings their camera, especially the successful photographers.

My original post on August 29 unintentionally and unexpectedly started a wide-ranging (15page), sometimes interesting, discussion. It was really meant only as an observation, nothing more.

That discussion confirms what we already knew, that most of us use BOTH mobile phones and dedicated, sophisticated cameras, generically described as “dslrs.” The choice often depends on a variety of factors, some of which are: “which is most readily available when the photo opportunity arises?”, “what is my target today?”, “is this a dedicated photo shoot?”, etc.

While obviously I am not arguing for or against the use of mobile phone cameras, I will say to those of you who dismiss a high quality mobile or cell phone camera as one only for “snapshots,” you should look at the results of the annual Mobile Photography Awards. Talk about “art” and “quality”! Also see Ken Rockwell’s extraordinarily positive review of the IPhone 12 Pro Max.

So, coming full circle and without trying to discover the EXIF data, which, IF ANY, of the four photos in my original post, do you believe were taken with an IPhone 12 Pro Max or with a Canon 80D with an EF 100-400mm f/4-5-6L IS II USM lens? For your convenience, I have attached the four photos again here.

After time for replies, I will post the answer if you are interested.

#1 is the Dslr--the others have more noise especially the night shot.

Thank God you decided to make another run at this! Perhaps this version can go to 25+ absolutely useless pages!

I decided, more than a decade ago, that I wanted a viewfinder on my camera, which cells do not have. I haven't changed my mind. With the sun behind them cells are next to useless. With the sun in front of them cells are still next to useless. I laugh when I see dozens of cells being waved at near arms length as their owners try to snap events and processions. Cells are best on a dull day. A dull day means a dull photo. Cells have created a craze for selfies - at least this has reduced the defacing of property etc with the message "Tom? was here". But the mentality remains the same. Yes - cells are good for instantly sending pics? round the world. But that is about all they are good for. Now that cameras have wi-fi that advantage is fast disappearing.

Likewise I *must* have an eyepiece. For me it’s not about trouble with seeing the screen in sunlight. I haven’t experienced that problem.

For me it’s all about holding the camera steady: elbows in, headbone engaged. The typical phone user’s stance is a fine example of how not to hold a camera.

I use an m4/3 thaz about as small as a phone. Acoarst it has an eyepiece. But there’s also a version with no eyepiece and I really cannot imagine using it.

I made a simple observation and asked one simple question. I can’t help it that a lot of members wanted to debate. I suggest you turn off your computer, have an iced tea and relax. Life is too short.

Those are my thoughts as well. I also want to know if a cell phone can take anything other than a PDF. I know Apple has a "raw" file format, but I haven't seen much on it. You'd need a pretty big memory chip in the i-phone.

Your best camera is the one you have with you - and it's often a cell phone.

To be honest, they all look like they could be mobile camera shots to me except the covered bridge. That looks like Canon color to me and when I look at the lettering on the sign it is much sharper than I would expect from an iPhone.

I'm not as sure about the night shot. It's possible it is the DSLR also if you didn't have a tripod and set the ISO high. Also, iPhone's tend to do some kind of HDR trickery to try and make a useable overall exposure instead of the artful exposure you've gotten. That said, I think you could get that shot from either camera.

While all the shots are nice, they don't showcase what a real camera can do for controlling depth of field, shutter speed, or field of view with interchangeable lenses.

It’s not only natural but it also steadies some of the most lightweight outfits.

Some m4/3 are the size of FF Sonys but some are very pocketable, like my GM5 (see pic below). I always use only OIS lenses on it cuz it has no IBIS. But I still need to steady it against my headbone !
.

12-32 is the smallest OIS lens I know of.

I do agree with
"Looking Through the Glass "!

As I migrated from my F4004 Through a long list of "Point & Shoot " 📷 Cameras, one of the first things I lost was a viewfinder

Some of the earlier Kodak Digital cameras still had an optical viewfinder but later models lost this feature.
Agree with your comments on sunlight blinding the screen.
Have to revert to TRUE Point & Shoot & trust the camera in these cases. Picked up a D3100 about a year ago and the Through the Lens viewfinder was a real treat!
Still, I will use my Cell phone to catch anything I might miss getting out the DSLR.
