Those artists created NO new rules. They created opportunities for critics to create new rules. How do you think all of those “isms” got tagged on there ?

I'm suggesting that they did indeed create new "rules". To be a "cubist", didn't you have to follow certain "rules"?

I think at least some of the "isms" were tagged on by the artists themselves.

All I'm saying is that the strong reactions elicited by references to photographic "rules" are based on different interpretations of the word.

I'll leave you with one of the Merriam-Webster definitions of "rule":

"...an accepted procedure, custom, or habit."

If you don't like the "rule", just unaccept it....

Not broadening the rules, broaden the definition of the word "rule"....Some people seem to use it too rigidly.

One needs the courage to break free.

Yes, and the modernists distorted perspective, muralistis painted people with "rubber hose" elbows, and did all sorts of other weird things. But how many of those works have you ever seen hung on living room walls? Mostly in museums and on the back walls at Abuelos. You can do it. A few may like it. Not many nay buy it.

Living room walls ........

Yes. Just not acknowledging that he is correct. I studied the movements that have been mentioned here during the just-completed school year. Also talked about this same subject with my two friends who are art teachrrs. One has a specialty in museums, one in art history. Each is more knowledgeable, informative and fun to talk to than just about anyone here.

If you are not claiming that you are making art with your photography, the rules don't matter. If you are claiming to be an artist, you'd better be aware of the rules, even if you choose to ignore them.

Break them and see what happen. It might surprise you.

Being unware of the rules is not an excuse for failing to follow them.

Would Cezanne have existed if he had followed the rules?
